My experience at mixed-gender tournaments is that the men are either too nice, or too dismissive. Very few men treat you just like another competitor unless you're really good (which I wasn't).

Just look, where they are looking happy.png

I think you are  right in that if tournaments are organised well it is usually very safe, but there is another dimension....lets call it "romantic interest".

If you are there to play chess it can be an extra thing to have to deal with you don't really want.

It's usual for tournaments and team matches to be "man heavy".....if you want one that's great...but if you don't, it can get a bit tiresome.

I think thats true of pretty much any thing tho...men will generally try their luck with most women in most places, not jus chess tournaments lol ..n from wot i seen it seems like top chess players get wit other chess players anyways...most of the GMs i have watched so far are married to WGMs or high level players...am sure Giri is married to a chess player, n who is the dude whos wife died? Aronian maybe...she was a chess player too right? Cant really blame the fellas for tryin to meet a lady in a tournament rather than at a bar or sumthin where he probably wont meet sumone like minded...u wud think the attention wud be kinda flattering...i can think of worse things than playing at a tournament with a bunch of talented females who all want my number hahaa

Men have a clear mental advantage as well. Have you seen the scc? Hikaru one of the best men players in the world crushed Hou yifan the best women player in the world 23.5 to 1.5.

I dont think that has anything to do with sex tho...no mental advantage Hikaru is jus a better player...he was No.2 in the world at one point n hes still in the top 20 now, Yifan has never been ranked in the top 50 that i know of so its not a surprise that Hikaru can defeat her quite easily..

Wow..I just beat Noam happy.png

Then he spoiled it all and said this  "  Looks like we have the next Boris Gelfand over here! Want to play another one? "

errr no Noam !

Hou Yifan's peak ranking was #53. And as I have mentioned elsewhere, it was while she was taking a full courseload at university. Her coach tried very hard to get her to not go and focus on chess, but she chose not to. Meanwhile, lots of men, like Magnus, just drop out of high school and get online degrees, which are practically meaningless. Now she is a full time university professor. Hikaru beating her had nothing to do with her being a woman, but rather how much of her life she dedicates to chess. For Hikaru it's nearly 100% whereas for Hou Yifan, it's just a hobby.

Yes, Giri is married to Sopiko Guramishvili a WGM, Aronians wife who sadly passed away, was Arianne Caoili a WIM

It's all understandable...up to a point

Poor us if we can't do that anymore

I have covered this topic extensively earlier. And a few heated arguments were there too in this forum. Interested people can go and see the arguments in the following linktongue.png

Well, easiest explanation is that those guys didn't have any experience interacting with women, so they were naturally awkward + nervousness from the tournament. Some might have lacked experience with women in that particular activity but unlike physical contact sports, I have trouble see what possible mental gymnastics happens when playing a board game against a woman.

No idea about dismissive or condescending people. Probably lack of women in their club led to that this type of behaviour and ideas went unnoticed. Should have been corrected the first, and at the same time the last, time they said something like that to another club member.

It's a hard one too judge sometimes, too dismissive, or too attentive ?!

Just playing for the chess is fine, but you can;t divorce attraction just because it's chess.
