Won on time

I just won a game against EvansGambit on time, it was a 3 day game and he was on a rating of 1808 and myself around 1550.

Now he was winning the game quiet comfortably a rook up and my pawns were in a mess. Now i have gained 30points in the rating systmem (very undeserved) and he has been penalised (very unfairly as its probably taken a lot of wins and good play to get there).

I think there should be a button like offer draw where maybe you can give your opponent more time or something.

Disagree.

losing on time stinks you get no joy of checkmating them!

I agree that a button should be installed to allow an opponent more time.  It will be a rare day that you'll see me use it, as I believe that time is part of the game, but it would be a good addition for those of you who aren't jerks.

Then choose time controls that are of longer durations, isn't there a 14 move rule?Isn't there a vacation rule? Time is the most vital component of chess, giving an opponent more time is weak and worthless. Off with their head!

If you accept a game with a certain time control, and can't abide by the accepted rules, you lose.

Time is part of rated chess folks, you have to grow up and deal with it.

I have a great idea, why don't we have a "Girly-man" chess division? Where all the weak and worthless and spineless and "can't we all just get along" players can play? Instead of Black and White, we can have Pink and Rose pieces? The you can take back all your moves, have as long as you want to play and adjorn games when you want? Everyone can draw every game and nobody has to be less of a person for losing? It is a bad thing to win you know? Everybody can have the same ranking, say 3000, and playing badly is ok as long as you are a good sport?

Erik, can you program all this so all these "Girly-men" can feel good about themselves because they are LOSERSSSSSS?

To the players against having this option available,

I've noticed that many people on this site seem to be against ideas that do not negatively affect them in any way.  The ideas only apply to the people who will wish to use them.  What is the point in arguing against it?  Is it to make sure that everyone takes internet chess as seriously as you do?  I doubt I'd ever use the button, were it there, but it would be a nice addition for those who want it.  Most of us are here for fun.  It makes me wonder who the losers really are.

Well i disagree with what silentfilmstar13 says he just said it would be a nice addition for those of you who are not jerks (his words) then he goes on to say he is not sure who the losers are , You know the time controls when you start the game if you need more time then choose a longer time control for all your games it's that simple.

You are completely wrong here as sooner or later there would be some guy who loses on time who gets upset that the winning player refused to give him more time. So, this option would just create more problems and ill feelings. Its just like the take back option on ICC, I have had players curse me and even my mother because I refuse to give takebacks, which are NOT a part of rated chess anyway. There will always be players that think their opponent SHOULD give them more time rather than accepting them losing on time just as there are those who think you SHOULD allow takebacks if they are available.

Erik, I have an even better idea: Why not have a "Pink" star membership too? Where all the girly-men can know who they are and have as many buttons they want to program their Girly-men" games? Want to adjorn? Fine. Want to take 3 weeks to move so they can go shopping? Fine. Avoid losing rating points? Fine. Maybe even meet up in the Minneapolis Airport washroom with a US Senator for a little toe-tapping in the stalls? That would make them all happy I am sure.

Say $1 extra per month for each extra button? Great idea. Everybody is happy and you make more money?

This makes no sense at all, you argue that you wouldnt use a more time option yourself but then add that it would be a nice option for people who arent jerks?! I assume you mean those who would give more time arent jerks and those who wouldnt are? Doesnt this make you a jerk since you say you wouldnt use it as you think time is part of the game?  Maybe I am just confused or you are? Smile

I don't see how a player getting upset has any negative impact on you.  I barely care when my girlfriend is mad.  Are you really that sensitive?  And I'm the girly-man?

I think this option would be good for unrated games, but for the reasons given... I don't beleive it should be an option for rated games. Much like the "move take back" button some people have talked about... great option for non-rated games, but probably not a good idea for rated games.

If the button is there, people will feel ethically bound to use it.

"If the button is there, people will feel ethically bound to use it."

I've never felt ethically bound to help my opponent, but as we all know, I'm an incosiderate jerk.

Oh, I missed the last couple lines of this before.  Yes, I was admitting to being a jerk.  I like to win.  I like to play by the rules.  But I don't much care when others don't.  In fact, it serves to bolster my superiority complex when others don't hold themselves to the same standards as I hold myself.  I'm rambling now, but, in sumnation, I'm unabashedly cruel and well aware of it.

Yeah, I'm a jerk and proud of it.

Erik, can I have a jerk button for an extra $1 per month?

And to all those that want to "just get along" maybe cross-stitch is more your speed than a turn-based game that is based on "WAR".
