Won’t let me play a selected friend

Hi all. Suddenly - after a year+ of playing a friend (and only him) - game invites sent to him are instead rerouted to random players I do not know. He’s tried to challenge me and the same thing happens to him. Is it because he is highly ranked and my game is so ridiculous it would make all of you weep with laughter, I wonder?

Same here. Also discovered that our chat has been left on the new game with the random players, which is not really ok!
I had the same issue and this is how I worked around it.
On the homepage click "more"
Select "friends"
Then "send challenge link"
"create link"
"copy link"
After you've copied the link go back to your "friends list"
Click the toggle button on the friend you want to challenge and click "send message"
Paste the link send the message and when they click on it you should be able to play.
