As a sportsperson in high school, I had a coach point out problems with my technique - stance, follow through - stuff like that. What's an easy way to spot the most obvious mistakes I make against particular openings?

technique in chess is about visualization pattern recognition.  There are 5 visualization pattern recognition techniques.  And, of course, you acquire those techniques through practice, practice, practice.
