And who's layman?
World Championship 2014?
Yep on a few of those. Anand looks like he will face Carlsen again, & lose again. The match will most likely happen in November again. Fide should open up the bidding this time so the match could take place anywhere, that's part of the excitement. I don't know about the fide prez thing. I don't think Magnus can refuse to play Anand again & I'm sure he won't, I've been talking to him about it & he's looking forward to a rematch. Just kidding, not actually talking. & yes, once a year is way too often.
I think a one year cycle might be tougher for the candidates than for a player like Carlsen.
They have to perform all year, to meet criteria to play in the Candidates tournament, and then win that.
All that's really required of him is to sit back and wait for the challenger to arrive at his table. He can cherry-pick events he wants to participate in. He can go and play in the Fiji Open if he wants to.
Agree rooperi.
Another point is that Carlsen does little preparation, and he doesnt really need to prepare since he has been playing all the candidates regularly for many years.
This is a result of modern chess where preparation is having less and less impact on the game.
True. I must point out that I did not mean it would be true for every champion, I think Carlsen is a special case. I think being a candidate was easier for him than it is for the current bunch, because of his dominance.
Even so, he barely scraped through.
He may have barely scraped through in the 2013 candidates but I can't help but believe that if he played that same field 3 times he might tie for 1st once, completely dominate for clear first once, then maybe finish 2nd once. I don't think any other player in the world could have that average. He is very consistent, just look at his finishes against all these same players in so many tournaments in recent years & look at all their average finishes.

Exactly, that's kind of my point. He's so dominant, and there's still a substantial chance for failure.
Being a candidate is much harder than being the incumbent.
They're all useless & Carlsen will kick Anand's wimpy ass in 2014 also.
(Is my slightly drunken way of looking at things...)

Can someone explain in layman's terms what is going on with the Candidates tournament?
I take it, that the tournament is going on right now, and Anand has clinched the win? Does that mean Anand will face Carlsen in another series for the title?
When will the championship series take place? Is there a venue already selected? What about match conditions? Will the presidency of FIDE be settled by then? Will that have any effect on the match?
Also, is the WC going to be held every year? Does Carlsen have the right to refuse a challenger? Isn't once a year a bit excessive?
Thanks.
