Taken from the FIDE rule book.

3.7.1.a If the scores are level after the regular twelve (12) games, after a new drawing of colors, four (4) tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move

3.7.2 If the scores are level after the games in Article 3.7.1a, then, after a new drawing of colors, a match of 2 games shall be played with a time control of 5 minutes** plus 3 seconds increment after each move. In case of a level score, another 2-game match will be played to determine a winner. If still there is no winner after 5 such matches (total 10 games), one sudden-death game will be played as described below in Article 3.7.3.

3.7.3 If the score is still level after five matches as described in Article 3.7.2, the players shall play a one sudden death game. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds starting from move 61. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.

The question is, how fair is the last sudden death match? Black gets 4 min and white gets 5 min but black will win the championship even if it is a draw.

Surely a 2800 player can find a way to play dead openings, trade as muh as possible and draw as black even being 1 minute down, I don't think 1 min is a huge disadvantage at all.

Hello?

It's a blitz game. White plays objectively bad moves on purpose so black can't just make an easy draw. Black must refute the bad moves having only a few minutes on the clock or lose. That's the basic idea.

just two 5 min games? i can't see how this isn't a joke

My threads get burried for some reason, they don't even appear on the "Most recent posts" in V3 anymore Yell

I hope you're joking. If white purposely makes bad moves then black doesn't need to play for a draw. He can go for the win.

Not "free piece" or "2 move combo" bad moves, nimzo - it's not easy to refute tactical stuff in blitz, and black has less time from move 1 so it makes perfect sense.

Look for example at the Carlsen-Van Wely game from Tata 2016, and that was classical.

White can play some crazy variation of the king's gambit to see what happens.

I'm surprised to see that used as a tiebreaker (even in the very unlikely scenario of it happening - though more likely this year).  It's not  chess, in the sense of playing for a win under fair conditions; it's about tactics to win the competition, in the way you said.

You have a reasonable speed rating, you know what I mean. You present the opponent with problems that, if solved correctly, result in a good position for them. However the problems are (ideally) impossible to solve in the small amount of time.

Something sensible like black wins counting double, like in soccer and the world championship would be over now.

That soccer rule is just plain stupid. There's no advantage in playing in your stadium.

Robert Hübner tied a Candidates match against Smyslov, but Smyslov classified because a roulette wheel decided so.

that is true. there was a time they used to toss a coin.

Sounds like another FIFA scandal.

The sooner it ends the better i think. Whoever wins the title i hope they do it either on the 12th game or in the 4    25 minute games. If it was up to me i would rather have 5 minutes and have to win then 4 minutes and have to tie. But either way it seems like a poor ending for the world championship.

btw thanks to the op for spelling it out.( gee he looks alot like Dexter Morgan who was the main character in one of my favorite shows.)
