Ok, for Christmas, I was given the option of choosing between going to the World Open and the US Open in 2023. Which one should I go to and why?

It will depend on your personal goals.

I had a similar scenario (not involving Chess, but involving a Sudoku competition) some time in the early 2010s in a Sudoku tournament in Singapore. I am unable to recall which year it was, but I believe it was some time between 2011 and 2013.

On that particular year, I cleared the "online entry stage" and the "physical elimination stage" (just made these names up, forgot the actual names of the rounds) of my tournament to qualify for the final stage of "Singapore category" tournament (amongst many participants). However, because I was a finalist for a similar tournament in the previous year, I received an invitation phone call to attend the "Asia-Pacific category" tournament and I was offered a choice between attending the "Singapore category" and the "Asia-Pacific category".

Attending the "Singapore Category" tournament guarantees all finalists S$100 in cash as well as a hamper. Attending the "Asia-Pacific category" tournament will only guarantee all finalists a hamper. However, the prizes for the top three categories in the "Asia-Pacific category" were much higher than the corresponding top three categories in the "Singapore category".

After careful deliberation, I decided that competing in the "Asia-Pacific category" will give me a greater sense of achievement as the event is only open to previous finalists of the tournament (as well as top-performing Sudoku players in other countries, if I can recall, but at least the participants were of multiple countries of origin). This event was conducted within a centre area of a shopping mall (visible easily to shoppers).

Even though I only remained a finalist in that tournament in the end, it kind of gives me a sense of achievement to be able to compete against the best of players from different backgrounds and country of origin.

I feel that in your case, being able to compete against world players in the World Open will give you exposure to the different types of players globally (which may not be the case for the US open).

You should evaluate the cost. I live near Philly, so the World Open was an easy choice.
