Worse online than in OTB?

Sort:

I have an 1814 USCF rating, yet on chess.com I have a 1500 blitz rating, 1600 in bullet and standard, and 1700 correspondance. I also have only an 1800 tactics trainer rating. I find that when I play online, I consistently lose to players whom I know are considerably worse than me. I am also careless, and blunder random pawns and even pieces in positions where I never would OTB.

Is it possible that I just don't play as well online than OTB? Does anyone else experience this?

Impossible!

It's the opposite for me. I suppose is a matter of getting used.

1. It is pointless to compare ratings.

2. It is commonly shared on the C.c forums that people take OTB more serioiusly and are much more focused in ther OTB games.

3. Kay is in love, so don't listen to him.

I would, but I'm affraid it is like Beatlejuice; if you say the name too many times, they appear.

I feel your pain. Sometimes a guy I can tell is a bigger patzer than me wins a game from me (I 'go to sleep' cuz his moves look so weak and then I fall for a cheapo or lose on time).  I could have writen your post - all your numbers are close to mine. I had been attributing not being able to play better in blitz to my advanced age. But I have a friend older than me who is just the opposite - his on-line is much higher than his OTB. I think some have skills for OTB and others for on-line or Correspondence.

It is very much what Kleelof said. You can't compare the ratings in the first place. And his second point; if you try much harder otb your play will be much better there. And 3. Otb games and online games are 2 different things. Psychology, the clock, concentration and fatigue are important otb. While patience and memory of your plans/tactics are important.

thanks for the input

uscf can get inflated since most players only play people in their region, it is not uncommon for 2k uscf in 1 state to be as good as 2.2k in another.

i think online is pretty accurate as long as you play a bunch of different opponents, the general rule is that online ratings are higher than real ratings.

It is nothing to do with ratings.  If you are making mistakes on-line that you would never make with a real board and pieces that is pretty obvious whether your chess.com rating is higher or lower than your OTB.

I also play very much better OTB than on-line.

There is another advantage to OTB.  Opponents find it more difficult to be openly rude, or to "disconnect" when they are lost, thereby wasting 5 minutes or so of my life.
