Worst player?

Hands down I gotta think I'm the worst player on this site but that will not stop me from trying, love the game.. My big problem over all is that I learned to play wrong via those who taught me. Now for the first time I am reading (though very little due to the festives at hand) about how to play right compliments of this site. That said, how many games should I be able to win on the easy mode against the computer before I play on-line? So far the I have a big 0 to my credits and the computers beating me fast!

Also, I am having trouble with Casteling. When I try and do it the King switchs back to his origional position. Any opinions and help greatly appriceated.

Dude, being the worst player is my trade make. We'll have to battle for the title ;)

if you cannot castle by moving your king 2 spaces over, then it may not be legal for you to castle in that situation! check the rules: http://www.chess.com/article/view/chess-rules--basics

Yeah, you can't castle if your king is in check, or if he would go over a square that is attacked when he castles.

If I play ultra fast I will always loose against computer in easy level. However, thinking a little bit on each move, considering the chess principles, you should be able (as I was) to win every game against that level, the computer will always show you an opportunity to take the match at the easy level.

Also, I forgot, I reccomend the interactive courses at chessmaster software. The made me grow a lot. You can read my blog about it.

Before all this, stop saying you're the worst player, even as a joke, because then your mistakes will become part of the joke. You have to take your mistakes seriously (but constructively) so you have the will not to repeat them again and to improve.

Haha I love this thread. Well let me try and help you here by first saying this: Everyone is bad at chess. It's just to how good are you to find the mistakes?

Here is my advice, it's not about how many games should you play or win to decide when to move up and go to a next level and play others online. In chess, you progress slowly with what you learn. Also, computers are uber good! why? because they are computers: they retain more than memory can. So my advice is actually play people, yes, online.

First step, which you already have succeeded in doing, is have confidence and love the game. Chess is supposed to be a fun game, try not to take it all too seriously, otherwise a loss will make you nuts. Second, play your level, until you realize it's all the same or too easy. Slowly move up to higher levels, this will make you familiar with the ability to find the object of the game. Chess is an easy game to master, so losing will mean nothing. Learn from your mistakes.

If you dont have time to read, well play. Play and take note of bad moves, and why they were bad. If you do have time to read, read the beginning, the basics: how to move pieces, capture, and find checkmate. Even if you already have, do it again. It's good to keep the basics fresh, and when people tend to have a hard time playing chess, its because the basics are very faint. So read that again, then move onto tactics or strategy if you have the time to.

To be good in chess is to have played for a good amount of time. But to play, you should have a few tips to help you. Here are a few:

  1. When beginning, play for control of the center.
  2. Protect your pieces from enemy capture or threats
  3. Don't bring your queen out too early
  4. Castle immediately if the game is open.
  5. Develop your whole army.
  6. Don't forget: the object is to checkmate their king.

Castling...you can't castle if the squares your king moves through are under control of an enemy piece. You also can't castle if a rook moved, or if you moved the king.

Hope this helps. cheers.

Oh, one more piece of advice..don't move a piece because you don't know what else to do. Think carefully, because there is always plenty of good moves. haha

ill move my life like moving in chess one you decide no turning back, but i'm not afraid to lose cause 'ive always win when i've learn something and i get it  especially when i'm lost and that is the purpose of chess and life, to learn and to improve, don't worry in life there's always a second change and in chess there is always a rematch. good luck!

First off, playing OTB chess (real-life) is better than any chess you'll play on the internet, as there's a huge difference between a screen and a mouse vs. a clock and moving pieces, not to mention your opponent.  If I were you, I'd play some unrated games of email chess.  This way, you can practice playing real life opponents and get real chess situations, but you're allowed to spend as much time as you want to analyze and make the best move.  Also, this doesn't put much pressure on you about "ratings" and what not, just developing your chess game.

Just play. If you give up when your losing, then you shouldn't be playing in the first place. Just play, play and PLAY!!

ya keep on playing you get beter when you play stronger players then you...

There is always someone better, faster, stronger out in the world. It is also true that there are weaker people.  Chess is a game of personal gain. So don't get down on yourself! Hey the computer can still kick my ass if i don't think about my moves very carefully. It is all about trying to better yourself and your game!

HyperLucid

Thanks for the replies! All very good and true advice. I have found that a lot of my failing to beat the computer is due to my moving a piece too fast with out thinking a little longer. It is also new and difficult for me to be looking at the computer screen as I have different focal points for my eyes (Slight lazy). All the more reason to slow it down a bit.

Got my 1st challenge via e-mail so this is all starting to look really good, can't wait to get started!

Cheers all!

Someone in this thread said chess is an easy game, its easy to learn difficult to master but its an interesting journey that never ends. If you write the the possible moves in a chess game like 1000000... it would fill a 90 page notebook actually its even more than that. You have got an important ingredient in you the 'passion' you'll certainly improve.

Actaully, the number of possible chess games is bigger than the  number of atoms in the universe. So, it's a little more than a 90 page notebook, hehe...

Many times I see this argument "the number of possible chess games is bigger than the number of atoms in the universe. I'd like to undestand, if the universe

is endless, why the number of  universe's atoms is less than number of games ?

ATJ1968
Very good point fleiman. I think it means our universe . i.e. The 8 or so planets that orbit the sun that we know about like saturn, mars, jupitor, pluto, etc...
