It's an open question whether Gary could have defeated Carlsen in a match. But his game are fantastic compared to Carlsen's grim style.
Would Kasparov have been able to beat Carlsen, Karjakin, or Anand in a match?

The players of today have the advantage of having seen the past.
If in the parallel world we gave the greats of the past (a) hey this is the internet (b) this is a chess engine (c) these are the games of today's greats (d) gave them a year for it sink in.
I think it would all be pretty evenly matched.
I highly doubt that. But peak Kasparov would crush peak Anand and Karjakin, and would probably also beat peak Carlsen.
Kasparov still remains the greatest player of all time, even carlsen considers him the greatest chess player that the world has ever seen
Carlsen crushed Karpov when he was a little kid, and was close to crushing Kasparov too. He then got coaching by him, and he has matured as a chess player. How is Kasparov supposed to beat him?
It's scientifically proven that Carlsen would beat Kasparov. Under Chess.com's CAPS system, Kasparov is rated about 2815. Carlsen is rated about 2950.
Kasparov would beat Carlsen if he was born with engines as strong as they are now. Kasparov did all his analysis himself. He is a better player in my book. I think it's thanks to engines that Kasparov can say he is the greatest of all time.
Isnt it a shame we are not discussing hypothetical situations?
Also, CAPS is bs.
A match between Carlsen as he is now and Kasparov at his peak would be a wonderfully appealing prospect.
Kasparov had great presence over the board but Carlsen seems to have inexhaustible self belief. Kasparov had good preparation, of course, but did not rely upon it as so many do now. Carlsen is renowned for wanting to avoid theoretical memory contests. So I would predict very few Berlin defences and some complex chess with plenty of pieces on the board.
Impossible to know who would come out on top but I rather think that Kasparov dominated during a period when his opponents were stronger than Carlsen has to contend with. Maybe that makes him the favourite. Weaker though his opponents are, however, Carlsen's total domination is impressive - you can only beat the people across the board. Maybe an opponent as formidable as Kasparov at his best would allow him to reach new heights.

People seem to think that the great players of the 70s dont match up to today. What about players of the 90s?
