Would you expect a mathematician to make a better chess player than an artist?

The question is "would a mathamatician make a better chess player or an artist".  I guess it's bady worded, but the way it is worded, the question doesn't reach outside of a single Mathematition himself.  Would a mathematition be better at chess, or better at art?  The answer is Math.

lol, good point.

BKB misread the question. He should try copying and pasting the title.

What good point? He misread the question!

It can be read two ways right?

BigKingBud

No, it can't be read both ways.

BigKingBud

It would have to say, "Would a mathematition be better at chess, or would an artist."  Obviously there's a few ways to say it, but the way the OP said it, it excludes anyone except the Mathematition.

leiph18

Ok, I think BKB is right actually.

For example, the sentence "Would a dog make a better pet than a cat?" seems incorrect... it seems to suggest a dog can be a pet or it can be a cat.

I don't know the specific grammar rule, but my ear says something is off about it.

BigKingBud

I think it's obvious what the OP meant to say.  But, I've been  following the thread since early, and I just read it for what it was.  Then, I thought it was weird that everyone else turned it into a artists vs mathematitions battle.  I'm also PRETTY DANG sure the OP is officially a troll.

Add the understood word, "would" at the end of this and it would be clearer. But the meaning is clear enough as it is. There have been ~100 posts answering the question that was asked.

BKB put his question in quotes, but couldn't even get the question right. Then he attacked the question he got wrong.

In chess you need to be good at making calculations, but wouldn't a very creative person such as an artist be better at recognizing chess patterns and good combinations?

This was the original post. The intent is absolutely clear here even though there's no mention of  a mathematician in this question.

BKB is acting as a grammar troll. Not quite sure why, since the question that was asked is fairly interesting.

leiph18

Naa, I saw it simply as an interesting observation. Yes he got the quote wrong, but I knew what he meant :p

As for the OP's question being "fairly interesting" "she" has a whole list of "fairly interesting" questions in her history of topics here.

AKA a bunch of troll BS.

BigKingBud

The meaning isn't clear enough IMO, I honestly thought it was asking 2 things about a single mathematition.  I figured people just started taking sides, because that's what people do.

Which would make the better chess player?  A mathematician or an artist?

First off, 'artist' is RATHER vague.  Because a mathematician could be considered an artist, in general ANY SKILL could be 'considered' an "art".  So, is the OP talking about painters?  Like Van Gogh or Picasso?  I mean, there is NO doubt that Curt Kobain was an 'artist', but, I imagine his hours of daily heroin abuse, loud headbanging music, and rock and roll lifestyle would all make it hard for him to be a chessmaster 'on the side'.  So I think the REAL question is, what is an artist?  Because, there's NO DOUBT in my opinion that EVERY SINGLE chessmaster EVER was/is a freaking artist.

Yeah, me too. I don't know if most people realize this :p

Maybe I don't know enough about art though.

Have you ever had hallucinations drip out of your eyes and ruin the floor?  Or had your dreams get mixed up with your reality so that you can't tell whether you are asleep or awake, only to wake up and have an eternal conversation with a demon?

leiph18

So taking drugs means you're creative?
