of course. ICCF tournaments, OTB tournaments, etc.. You are putting your skills to the test against other players for money prizes, just like blackjack in Vegas.

If you mean with my friends, then probably not cause my poker games are more social-based and less concentration-based.

Yes. For small sums only.

Yes, for chance games. Maybe for chess. I probably wouldn't pay per game on a regular basis because I can play for free. I might make a friendly bet with someone I know.

The problem with comparing chess and chance games is that there is such huge variation in chess skill, which can't be overcome by a roll of the dice or a good card draw. The best case scenario is when people play opponents of similar skill. However, money per game creates an incentive for GMs and Masters to prey on the weak. That's fine if you know what you're paying for (e.g., $10 to play a GM in the park). However, I've heard of people purposely keeping their ratings low so they can compete in the Under-1500 section for prize money.

yes. i did once in new york and took a few dollars from a street huslter in a blitz game, then ran off before he could win it back. terribly unfair, but there you go.

im glad most of you seem to like the idea. i am a recent business graduate and have majored in computing and marketing. i am developing a chess game which will allow players to play for free as all sites but also gives players the opportunity to spice up a game with a small stake.

when i say small im mean 10 pence 20 pence and 50 pence. i have received allot of positive responses and this is encouraging me further to go out there and get this game developed.

i have created a website for people who have an idea for a new and original game but do not have the finance nor knowledge to create it and this is one of the ideas.

after numerous questionnaires and focus groups we came to the conclusion that there is a demand for this type of game and the demand has not yet been met.

we could not do any online questionnaires as our site is new and we have not yet installed a forum and it would be unfair to post questionnaires on other chess sites. i know i should not have posted this thread but i was curious to see whether our findings were accurate so i simply asked a question or two.lol

thank you all for your feedback it was very reassuring.

kind regards

You will have a cheating problem that will make Yahoo look like the COT.

Avatar of joshuaaiden

do you mean players playing with the help of offline systems?

Avatar of Elubas

well that's one way of cheating. Someone could just use chessmaster or something to tell them where to move if it's for money. That would be pretty hard to stop.

Avatar of hondoham

i'm one of those who thinks that the amount of cheating is grossly exagerrated by paranoid online players.... But, i personally would have a hard time stayng away from the chess engine if money was involved.  therefore, i believe it would be rampant.

Now if you went live OTB that would be different.... of course that would be very very different.

1. Yes, but not much.

2. Definitely! It's fun to hustle those kids who took chess club for two weeks in third grade!

No.

Dear joshuaaiden

1) a flutter for a small amount, like £1.00 on the lottery

2) I do not like the idea, apart from, proper organised tournaments where people face each over a table.

Apart from the cheating, I feel it could discourage and dishearten beginers and lower rated players.

The rating system is there to encourage people to play better and improve. There are plenty of other things to play and do if money is of interest, poker betting on horses, the lottery etc;

I also have found, some people can become bitter and nasty when money is involved even, small amounts.

I am not trying to discourage you from setting up the site. Go ahead and good luck but, I do think it will eventually go down hill after the intial newness wears of.

Would you ( step into a boxing ring with Mike Tyson ) play a GM.

Should you go ahead don't forget age restrictions on betting could be an issue

There are other points to consider, why has it not been done before and why do other chess sites, like this one not do it. Maybe talking to one of the Chess.com team may enlighten you more.

With kind regards and good luck

1. No

2. Yes but it would have to be over the board. Online the chances for cheating is greatly increased.
