Yes, because he was the winner of the strongest Candidates tournament in recorded Chess history a couple of months ago. A single loss can't just nullify all that. He's just a human being after all, a lost game every so often shouldn't be really shocking.

It isn't exactly just the Candidates he won either, he has won 5 of his 6 latest tournaments and is 0.5 from first in this one, has 55 points down to #2 on the rating list, has been awarded the Chess Oscar for best player of the year several years in a row etc.

Carlsen won a controversial decision in the Candidates tournament. He tied Kramnik, but Kramnik had a higher SB. He also had 1 loss where Carlsen had 2 losses. However, Carlsen had won 5 games and Kramnik only won 4. That's why they picked Carlsen. In my opinion, Carlsen and Kramnik should have had a playoff. But the current fad in FIDE is to emphasize wins, symbolic of "fighting chess".

The trouble in the Wang Hao loss, is that Wang grinded out a long endgame victory starting from equality. Hopefully Magnus hasn't started to get tired again.

The good thing is that this tournament has 6 potential winners. So it will be an exciting final round!
