I am a 1650  under 14s and thought I might try a tournament or joining a club. When I looked on the internet I was shocked to see that munich's under 14s had a guy with 2100 ELO and under 16s one with 2400 ELO. Im pretty disappointed now that I've got absolutely no chance of any tournament. Is this rating surprising?

Do you think I could play in tournaments as a 1650 at age 14?

If you join a club you will be able to play in league chess.  I'm sure there will be plenty of tournaments you can play in too if you want.  They have sections based on grades, so you can play in the minor section for example.  There may also be tournaments that have age sections, but I don't know anything about these.  I would think they would be rarer and require higher grades to be competitive than simply entering the minor sections of regular tournaments.

Careful of the ratings on this website though.  They arent really the same as elo or fide in otb chess.  They tend to be slightly inflated.

Hi promotedpawn.  Ofourse you can play in a tournament at your age and your grade, tournaments are usually based on grade and not age.  Have a look at the English Chess Federation web site (http://www.bcf.org.uk/) where you should be able to find tournaments near you at some point.  Definately join a club too!

Also, it's not surprising that some people at that age are those grades, some players in Russia are already super Grand Masters at that age! Smile

Good luck, hope this helped,

A

PS: the above assumes you are in England?  If you are anywhere else in the UK then they each have their own website.
