According to the reports Aronian offered draw at the 38th move, when Carlsen was down to a couple of minutes and engines evaluated the position as 0.00 only if Carlsen played the best move. I think many would have settled with a draw there and secured first place.

My engine was still showing black as slightly better.  -41.  Makes the draw decline ever more noteworthy

I thought that the game would end in a draw, but unfortunately of Aronian, he lost, and has fell below the 2800 rating barrier.

This is incorrect. Aronian offered the draw on move 48, as I remember it was after time control and engine on Chessdom showed 0,60 for Carlsen for move Nh3. He played similary strong move Nd1 instead.

Move 38 is claimed at Chess.com/Chessvibes but 48 does sound more believable looking closer at the game.
