I don't believe Anand's prep takes anything away from his sensational win over Aronian. I think it is to his credit that he invests his time planning for encounters...and actually remembering such prep, which in this case took place about one year ago. He played with the Black, and did not choose the opening...but he very well knows that Aronian had gotten the best of him many times in the QG. It is to his credit that he applied his research to achieve his objective.

anand only 15 minutes by the end of the game and he spent 30 on ...bc5, he had to work out most of it over the board and by n7e5 he was on his own.

Well it's debatable how much he was working it out and how much he was trying to remember as well.  Moves 14, 15, and 16 are all my houdini's top choice both after 3 seconds and more than a minute.  If he ever bothered to look at this position with a computer he surely had seen these moves before, and he admits preparing this line so...

Maybe he completely and entierly forgot his preperation, but I find it unlikely.  I'm sure he had to double check things OTB and he's still an amazing player... but I'm sure he'd seen these moves before.
