Why play the main line when there are faster ways to lose?
Nice!
A friend who has been trying to break 1500 wanted to try the French Defense. We sat down for 20 minutes, and went over the basic ideas, and pawn structures.
Later that day he played his first French and won, and broke 1500.
Yes openings are important, but thinking you have to know them cold, and 20 moves deep at the class level is rediculous.
Yeah I'm not a big fan of the "Paint by Numbers" approach to chess. I got to think in the long run you will be much better off relying on developing a deep understanding of concepts and principles as to relying on exact setups. Don't try to dumb the game down, try to smart yourself up. Eventually it always turns into a cat and mouse game, the person that can better "wing it" will usually win. That's kind of the Magnus approach.
An IM friend of mine once said that in order to master the game, you have to come up with your own theories of the game.
They don't need to be grand theories. It could just be an opinion that a certain position that's considered equal is actually quite good for white, or a position that's inferior is actually equal.
Don't blindly follow theory, use theory as a weapon to ensnare your opponents!
The whole post feels like a thinly veiled attempt to simply use the word 'gregarious' as many times as possible.
Which makes them "think," which makes them fail.
Assuming your oponent can't think might be a blunder.
