I know that games can be aborted on move one, but is there some way to mutually adjourn a half-done game?

To my knowledge, only as a draw.  If the game is rated you will each get an appropriate rating adjustment.  You can't get in the "way back" machine and pretend the game never happened, even if that's what you both want.
