advertisements on my premium membership?

The main reason I paid for a membership is to support a site I enjoy using.  I also hate the distraction of advertisements.....  I figure that is the tradeoff....  This site needs financial support to continue to improve, which I am all for.  The ads provide revenue and memberships provide revenue.  My assumption was that the individual memberships were more income for the site than the ads (at least when broken down by % of revenue per person).  Today I am having all these ads suddenly be on the top of my screen.  I know my membership is set to expire some time in June, but if I am going to have to deal with the ads then I am not going to bother paying for the membership....  Maybe that is just me....   I refuse to pay for any shirt that advertises a product also....  I figure if Nike wants me to have their brand on my chest, then they can pay me for being their billboard, but I damn sure am not paying them!

That said, I should contradict myself by admitting I did wear my chess.com T-shirt a lot, but that came with my 1st membership.  So I can argue it was the membership that I purchased not the shirt.  Besides, as a member of the chess.com community I want to be supportive of it and bringmore people to it and hence more revenue.  And...  well it led to the opportunity to play more OTB games with strangers I would meet in hotel lobbies and restaurants....  (have set in my car at all times).  Besides, I did not get a t-shirt last time I bought a membership anyway....

Anyway, my point is paid membership or advertising?  Because I for one, am damn sure not doing both and I am rather pissed that the site has failed to honor one of the listed benefits which I paid for.....

If you are getting pop-ups over a game, I'm guessing that they aren't coming from chess.com. You should run a malware checking program like AdAware on your system.

Some facts would be preferable to some guessing. I've seen ads a few times since becoming a premium member, which I'm guessing were screwups on the part of chess.com

Click on help in the upper right-hand corner and ask the people who run this site if you should be seeing ads or not as a premium member. If the answer is no, it's time to start making sure your OS, web browser and anti-virus program(s) are 100% up-to-date. Most major web browsers such as IE, Firefox and Google Chrome have "pop-up" blocker add-ons or extensions and as furtiveking noted there are programs such as AdAware that also block "pop-up" ads although you shouldn't need a separate program if you have a decent anti-virus program.

No need to ask staff, you aren't supposed to be seeing ads, with the exception of a banner on the home page from time to time (usually once a week, on Wednesday or Thursday, I forget which day). If you are a paying member, you shouldn't be seeing other ads.

Any chance of seeing a screenshot of these unexpected ads?

If banners are the ones across the top, then that is what it is.  They seem to go away at some point, or did yesterday, but they are back when I logged on today.  Yesterday is the 1st time I had experienced it though, so not sure about the once a week stuff.  I do have virus protection (AVG).

Art, you know me well enough to anticipate my answer to your screenshot question.  You have to walk me through the process.  I have never experienced this before in my years with chess.com, so unsure why it would start yesterday.....

Unfortunately you may want to try an adware remover.

I've checked your account, and no ads that i can see are showing anywhere on your account. The only ones you're likely to see are bottom left corner coming from meebo chatbar.

Assuming you're on a PC, the PRINT SCREEN (or PRT SCRN) key will capture a screenshot onto your clipboard.

Open the Paint application (click on Start in the bottom left of your screen, then All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint).

Copy (hold down CONTROL and press 'C' at the same time) the snapshot from the clip board; paste (hold down CONTROL and press 'V' at the same time) it into the Paint document, and save it (File -> Save ...).

If you you manage to capture something interesting, raise a flag here and await further instructions ... Wink
