Anti-virus interfering with Chess.com experience?

Hi

I previously had an issue using the site (a few months ago, see post here), which I ultimately resolved by uninstalling my anti-virus (then AVG). I've since been using no anti-virus (stupid, I know, but I never got around to looking for one). After several months without any issues on the chess.com site, I decided to try an anti-virus product once more and installed the free trial edition of VIPRE.

Since installing this, I'm suddenly having issues with the site again. This may be purely coincidental, but I believe the anti-virus has something to do with it.I suspect there is also some relation to the reliability of my internet connection (I typically get download speeds anywhere from 100kbps to 400kbps and latency (pinging google.com) in the 100-400ms range), because as with the previous issue I had this appears to be intermittent.

However, I haven't changed my internet connection at all over the past 6 months and didn't have any of these issues after removing AVG and before installing VIPRE.

The current symptoms I'm experiencing are most notably in on-line chess (I don't use any other areas of the site actively) and specifically the following that I have noticed (there may be others):

  • On my move, when I click on a piece, then click on the square I want to move it to, the piece disappears from its starting square but it isn't shown on the target square.
  • If I then submit the move, the board refreshes and the piece appears on its target square. (Incidentally, when castling both the rook and king disappear in this fashion). I also don't see the squares I'm moving from and to highlighted as I'm used to.
  • When I click on "Details" to see the current material status in the game, I see no details, just a blank grey space where the details should be. Sometimes this can be resolved by going back to the Messages tab and then to the Details tab again.
I really don't like not having any AV on my machine, so would like to see if this can be resolved without going to the drastic measure of uninstalling this.
I wanted to post some more details here to narrow down the diagnostic process, but cannot provide too much because right this moment everything seems to be ok again (as I said previously, its intermittent).
I usually use Google Chrome as browser and specifically experienced the issue in this. Next time it happens I'll also test in FF & IE, however I've been using Chrome throughout the last 6 months and haven't had these issues at all before installing an AV again.

I use Avast! Version 4.8 Home Edition with no problems. It doesn't interrupt me or steal focus, working silently in the background apart from a voice announcement every six hours or so that it has updated its virus definitions. I installed a two month trial that turned into a fourteen month trial once I had completed a quick survey! I'm not sure where I got that particular deal but here's a link to a very similar product from a trustworthy source:

Let me know how you go.

p.s. I seem to remember that the installation from the setup.exe took a while, don't panic, it's working.

I haven't looked at that AV package before but it is possible that it has some kind of link scanner where it attempts to scan the destination of all links on a page before you go there. I looked at the page for the software and didn't see anything like that but you may be able to tell in the software itself.

There is a note in the FAQ that if you have a firewall the HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection System) built into VIPRE may cause trouble. Might be worth looking into.

The issue seems to have gone away for now... Strange. I've been checking in regularly throughout the last 24 hours and it hasn't happened once, but over the preceding week or so since installing VIPRE it happened at least 50% of the time. Starting to think it was just a coincidence and something else was going on.

I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if it pops up again.

I also have such similer pboblem with this site. I also suspect that this site have some viral intrution to the free members but nowadays no problem with this site. but I relise that if we r using the AVG free vertion, during the live update the makers of AVG create virus in our system and they compel to buy a paid one. In my experiance the best anti virus programe is Norton internet security. try it
