can some one give some top tips for playing chess?

hi can any off you give me some tips. I am new and dont really know that much about chess. so can someone please give me some tips.

hmmm... I think how you are in life transalates into how you play this game. If you are serious you will put hard effort and work into learning the openings. If your laid back you will learn as you play. If you get excited easily you jump into moves quickly. etc...

The better you know yourself the better you will be able to find your chess style and optimize it.

1. Make sure you know all the rules of play

2. Don't call a Rook a 'castle'

3. Don't call a Knight a 'horse'

4. Don't rely on your opponent overlooking something

All over the world, pieces go by different names. People from here play from all over the world. People all over the world don't speak english. And, because of translations, might call the peices by different names than you want them to. When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter what you call the pieces; only that you understand how they move and why.

Some advice:

1) Before anything else learn the basic checkmates and all of the typical types of checkmates and the rational behind each of them to avoid being a victim and to foresee them when the appear in your games

2) Thoroughly study the Elements of Chess and the Endgame first the Endgame must be studied in direct relationship to the Opening and the Middle Game learning Chess in reverse and starting with the simplest positions and advancing to the more difficult is best way to learn.

3) Like any good General you need to know the terrain your fighting on it's very important to understand the Chess Board itself to know the location of each square on the board the squares color and understand the relationship of a square to the neighboring squares surrounding it.
