Can't challenge friends

I'm trying to challenge friends on the Android app. It challenges random players instead. Many other problems with the app but this is particularly frustrating to me.
I am also having this problem. Extremely frustrating.

I am also having this problem starting today. Seems like an update/bug was released today. Before today it worked like it was supposed to. Frustrated in that 1) didn’t want to play someone random and 2) cannot play my friends

I am also experiencing this problem; logging in on the computer doesn't help.
Same problem, and it copied my chat train with invited friend into the chat with random stranger. Just FYI — chat is NOT secure
It's so glitchy when trying to play with friends, I just get sent to someone random.

you must have either sucky Wi-Fi or a bad connection yo the live game server. I have 0 issues playing friends live.

Having trouble connecting to my one and only freind on chess.com. Had 3 random people turn up

This is still an issue and no I don't think we all have bad WiFi. The "Challenge a Friend" feature is almost unusable right now as you end up getting matched against a random person and then having to abort. "Challenging a Friend" should NEVER match you up with a random person, ever.
A year later and still no solution. does anybody knows if someone is looking into this?

I regularly have issues sending requests to a friend, only once recently they got sent to a random person, but usually (every day) it takes multiple attempts and sometimes up to 20 minutes before we're able to start a game together. I'm trying to ensure we're both in live chess now (can see the board) and I'm checking if my friend has connection issues because I know that mine is stable and fast.
I haven't yet ruled out that perhaps it might be caused by having multiple connections (ie. trying on Android mobile app at the same time as Chrome desktop browser)
