Can't Change Username

I wanted my username at first to be RedLightningStrike, but it was taken so I added my favorite number 27 to it. Now I wanted to change it to just RedLightning27, but when I click to change my username in the settings, it says at the top "Please wait until after your live chess session to change your username." Why can't I change it?

You are only allowed to change your user name once.

If you write to support@chess.com, they will probably help you.

That error message doesn't relate to changing previously though. I (don't think) I've ever changed my username and I'm getting the same message.

Completely log off the site from all devices. Log in, don't open a Live session, then try your name change.

RedLightning, I see the 27 in your name now. Can you please give us the answer on how you changed your name??

For the error in the OP, logging off first, then changing immediately after logging in will work.

help I need to remove profile and name from ches.com/so I can play against the computer and not a person. Was Ok a few days ago I must have pushed the wrong key. Help I have tried everything but can no do it

Attempting this myself and was unable to change my username.  Logged out of all devices, closed all browsers, have not changed my name before, and went to change immediately and still get the error.

Crazy how many people commented on this without reading the thread or without understanding what people said. 
People who have never changed their username before and are not playing any live chess are getting this error message.
Logging out on all devices does not work, chess.com still thinks you're in a session.

(This is clearly a bug ) BUT THIS WORKED FOR ME  -> When you go to the settings, click on your name/username beside your profile picture, then you'll be directed to the activity page from there you'll see an edit button at the top right of the page, click on that then change your username.

Clicking Change beside the username on the main Settings page takes you to the page to change the username.

I tried logging out of the app, deleting the app, clearing cookies and even disabling Live Chess. These are all the methods people are using. Nothing worked for me.

But then I tried going on the official site, logging in and changing my username there. It worked!

There is an alternative method which is going to the Help option and opening a ticket.
