Chess Blog oddities.

First, is there some compelling reason for having changed from the adequate chessboard used for displaying games in blogs, forums, messages, etc. to the inferior one we have to use now??

Second, when I create a posting, I generally do it in stages, saving it along the way. I noticed in the posting I am currently working on, when I clicked to view it, only the few sentences I had written before I first saved it appear (as if I hadn't added anything since) - but, when I click to edit it, almost the entire material shows in the editing window - I say, almost, because the posting contains two games, but only one of them show up in the editing window - however, when I save it, both games show in the saved blog posting. But when I click on the title to examine it, once again only the very first save shows and when I try again to edit it, only one game appears.

The other day, I was trying to add a game and put it into a table. It would go exactly where I wanted it in the editing window, but each time, after I saved it, it would display at the top of the page (far above the actual posting itself).

Additionally, out of curiosity, I was just perusing my archived postings and found that the new chessboard supersedes the former ones in previous postings - creating havoc to to all the careful  and tedious formatting.

Another oddity:

When I make a link, in a blog or forum enty or even a message, and type out the URL itself as the text to be linked, the link (nor the URL text) won't appear. Not only that, but when I go to the editing window to try to correct the problem, the URL I typed out is no longer there. This has been going on for 6 months or more.

PerfectGent,

I was curious about the puzzles. But I had gone to the daily puzzle thread and checked out the puzzles these. They display as puzzles without the move list (I don't know why), so there must be some method of hiding the moves (I don't know how).

PerfectGent,

I don't know. It's always seemed to me that the formatting of such things has been somewhat universal.  Maybe this, in itself, is just another oddity in this Era of Most Peculiar Happenings.

Another oddity that's been going on for quite a while, and which is extremely annoying, is that very often, after I post a game with a board, the final product just shows the game place-marker (what you see in the editing window). Even after having the game show correctly in a posting, sometimes it happens that later it shows up as a place-marker. It used to be I could simply go to the game editor (select the game and edit it) and re-insert the game. Now, when I do that, the game disappears completely.  Basically, what should take 2 or 3 minutes very often ends up taking 2 or 3 hours.

I like the new diagrams, but the puzzles should obviously have the move list hidden.  I didn't realize this was an issue because I've seen a number of them posted since that appeared to work properly.

It may well be the fact that it's a tournament forum -- I don't think the forum functionality is universal as I've noticed that in some areas there is some inconsistency (Group Forums, for example, have some bugs that have been fixed here for some time now such as always linking to the first post instead of the last etc.).

I wonder if the issue of wiping out the URL isn't a deliberate means of trying to discourage people from spamming the forums.

One pet peeve of mine is that sometimes the spellchecker seems to remove white-space between words causing them to run together in my post.

and another. My puzzle based on a game position (which relied on the moves being hidden) now has the moves on display with no apparent way of hiding them again. Thus making the point of the post useless.

it's because you set it up as a game instead of as a puzzle. sorry! :(

sorry batgirl. the honest truth is that this code slipped out before i was prepared :)

we made the change because so many people were unaware of the move list and the variations in it. plus there were these floating popouts that confused people. this one is more functional, but less attractive. it's a tough tradeoff.

as for the URLs, can you please provide a specific example of what you mean? then we can work on it. when i type out a URL it seems to work: http://www.chess.com/tactics <- that should work

While we're airing them, that's another pet peeve of mine with the diagrams:

The initial position setup, including the selection of the diagram type, cannot be changed once you have moved past those initial screens and onto editing the other subsequent aspects of the diagram.  It would be great if they were just additional tabs rather than seperate screens that you can never go back to.  Because of this, PerfectGent must delete his original diagram and recreate it if he wishes to correct the problem when it should really just be a simple edit.

I really do prefer the new diagram screen -- the pop-down annotations didn't always work properly (sometimes popping under, or over other content) and having the move list always visible is also a great improvement as I can more easily explore variations.

Now, if we could launch an analysis board from any of the diagrams that started on the currently displayed position....

Well, the board, in part, is a matter of preference, but the new board's main selling feature apparently is that it's simplistic (not to be confused with simple).  But if it's the board we are given, it's the board we shall use (obviously).

Erik,

I don't know if the url problem will occur in the forums (the example you gave does work), but it definitely occurs in blogs and in messages. In fact the other week I was creating a blog entry and tries to include 2 URLs with the URL as the anchor - one appeared, the other didn't. Again, when I we to edit it, the one URL wasn't even in the edit window. I tried a half dozen times, and each time one URL appeared, one didn't. It's really weird. I can't really give an example, because examples refuse to exist.  But to further illustrate, I recently made a blog entry, Schachdorf U. S. A.  This blog was a repeat from an article in my chess site. My original site has about 7 or 8 sources for the article, listed by URL. I copied these URLs to the new entry here, but not one of them appeared. After messing with this for a while, I finally gave up and  hypertexted (using a "word" link) to my original article to supply the appropriate sources.
