don't have anything helpful to add, other than i'm having the same problem and would also appreciate any answers to this
Chess.com App for Android - HTC Wildfire in the UK

Actually I found a way of doing it by downloading it onto my PC, then across onto the phone (at least I think that's how I did it). In any case, it is possible, but it would be much easier if it was in the marketplace.

Hi, I have htc mobile and just installed chess today after looking at your message. On your mobile go to; apps; market; games; brain & puzzle; top free; chess free; chess for android; when you see a chess board and it says done when you tap the screen then press menu on your mobile phone; and downloadl. It is really easy to do so now I will play a chess game. cheers.
note it takes 9 steps and each takes time to load; be patient and it works.

I don't think its possible, I've had my HTC Wildfire for months, every so often i have a try and hope something has changed/fixed. Never found a way to download it.
The "Market" app finds no search results if your search for "Chess.com". If you search for "Chess", you find many apps, none from chess.com. If you go to the Market place website using the "Internet" app and search for chess.com, it DOES find the app but it's not possible download it this way.
Think someone needs to contact the powers that be!

simeon,
I'm running the app on my HTC wildfire :)
Try this group. Click on the app link using the android it'll show a small icon in the top left (animated upside down arrow) letting you know its installing. Then as its installing it'll give you little instructional pop up windows.

If you're having problems installing, let me know and i'll take you through it step by step.

I couldn't download it directly using my phone (for some reason it wasn't in the UK Android marketplace), but used a work around by downloading it onto my PC, then transferring it across onto the phone.

use the group link i posted, go into the group from your android, and click on the download from there. I'm in the uk and am running the app on my droid.
Please note though the ones in the group are beta testing.
Glad to see others are now using the chess app on their HTC phone. I find it great when waiting or on pubic transport to play a game against the computer, swap sides, do stuff like that and try to win the game. Great as a coach when playing live chess.

Hi, I too am havig problems with this... Went to the link that was posted above but couldn't find out where to install it - it seemed it was just the app group forum page... please help!

I have the chess.com app on my Android (2.1) mobile phone. Downloaded it from the App market in the UK.
I realise it's of little help to those who can't find it, but it at least proves it was possible to download it once!

If you look at the latest news in the group, you can test the link there. You need to click on it from the droid though. It installs direct to the droid.

Just got a new HTC Wildfire today, which runs on Google Android. Can't see the Chess.com app in the Android Marketplace (is it available in the UK?), and having downloaded the .apk file from the chess.com website, can't seem to download that either. Any ideas?
