It's just an email address (like anand@chess.com) that you can use. You can read the mail here, or you can have it forwarded to some other box so you don't have to check this one. Presumably, you see an ad when you check the box, or there's an ad tacked to the bottom of the forwarded email. It's just a way for the site to make a bit of extra dough. It's free -- unlike, say, a vanity license plate.
