chess.com error

I just tried to play a 5/5 game.  At about the 4th or 5th move, when it was my turn, chess.com made a move for me (a4?  I'd never play that in the opening...).  Worse than that, even though that move showed on the board and on the score sheet, my clock kept running, and I couldn't make any other move, and since I couldn't do anything chess.com decided that I had "abandoned" the game so I "lost."  What caused this error to happen?

How are you playing? Website or mobile app? If you have premoves turned on then it is very possible that you accidentally made the move.

That said, if the clock was still ticking it could be that you got disconnected and the client didn't recognize the fact. That aligns with the fact that the game showed as abandoned.

You might check out the following if your on a computer:

Thanks for your response.  I'm playing on my laptop.  I don't have premoves turned on.  There was no sign of my being disconnected - I remained logged on and was able to post to this forum without logging in again.  What was especially surreal was that move a4 being made, or at least showing on my screen as being made, both on the board and on the scoresheet.  In the archive of the game, it does not show up at all.

I have noticed that when running the computer analysis after completing a game to see what moves I should have done, the computer seems to make some impossible moves!  For example, it sometimes assumes that I haven't moved a pawn and 'takes' my pawn with its pawn by moving its pawn to the original space of my pawn and removing it, even though my pawn has moved forward a step!

eg. I was black and my pawn was at G5 and my knight was at H5.  Computer's pawn was at H4. I move my pawn to G4. Computer moves its pawn diagonally to G5 and removes my pawn. Is this a glitch or is it some sort of rule that I am not aware of?

Thanks,

Barrie
