Chess.com REST API

Dear Chess.com developers. Your Android app is TERRIBLE. It may be acceptable for tiny phone screens, but android runs on a ton of devices of all sorts of sizes. Even if one were to play with button sizes, it still would be a highly uncomfortable interface. Perhaps manageable for the tech-savvy, but certainly not for my grandfather, who simply wants to play chess with me over the internet on his touchscreen, and does not care to learn about computing, web browsing, or English. I've pretty much decided to write my own app + server for this purpose, but it would be significantly better if I could plug it into your systems to allow him to play with others when he so desires. Please please please release a public api. It would significantly improve my grandfather's life. Regards, Anton.

+1 vote for the public API

For example I thought about showing my current games on my blog's homepage. I could do that by parsing the html of my chess.com's profile page and so on, but we all know it's dirty.

malloc

+1 for API as well.  Are you guys still looking for help in developing?

Dadg777

If not this, then someone needs to help Faisal with the app TWIC Files that are unfinished.  There's a promised Search function that doesn't work plus older games that should be included.

Lol I am so busy working on the chess.com app, its hard for me to even think about working on anything else. If anything, you'll see a much cooler database some day under the chess.com umbrella :).

hreedwork

Its hard to tell current status... Is there any ongoing work on a REST API?

TheGrobe

I thought erik had gone on record some time back in opposition to the idea of releasing an API because it would make it far to easy to cheat.

hreedwork

How about just for posting games? We collect a handful of NM and IM games at our local club, via DGT boards, and post them manually to Chess.com for the game viewer then publish the embedded code to Google blogspot, then advertise on blogspot, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.

TheGrobe

Good question. At a minimum, a bulk PGN loader would be useful if not a full blown API for this.

doughty

Have there been any updates on the possibility of an API? I have to disagree with effects of an API in regards to cheating. Yes, it might make it more accessible in a formal way to develop applications for cheating, but there are still ways to go about it now, and I'm sure people are using little applications that might help with their games already.

I think the majority of use with an API would be for the positive. I would even pay for developer access, and I think many others would as well.  An increase in revenue stream would definitely go in the "plus" column the API debate.

As an aside, has anyone developed anything for chess.com on their own? I'd be interested in trying out what other people have spent time developing.

TheGrobe

Yeah, I think anyone dedicated enough to automate their cheating here via an API could probably do so without an API.
