Angels dancing on a pin is refering to an old myth that philosophers in the Middle Ages were trying to get answers on those kind of questions. Many of those philosophers were monks, hence no, they would not talk about devils dancing on a pin. :-)

Paper was very expensive and creating books an enormous investment in time and money. No one would dare to write about such a subject.

It is nowadays an expression how incredibly detailed someones knowledge is.

Uhh...no.  I will agree that it's a badly named group however and should probably have the name changed to the anticheating forum.  I only joined after a "friend" told me he was going to bed and let Crafty work out his next move.  I thought he was joking but he wasn't.  So I turned to the group to resolve my conflict of whether to turn someone in who genuinely seemed both contrite and clueless.  Not a violation of the Terms of Service to have knowledge of cheating and not report it.

All that said I'm sure there are members who joined for nefarious reasons.

I have a chess board next to my computer where sometimes set up a game i play in online chess and look at different moves. I am a visual guy. And sometimes I do the same moves as the guy i play against, just with the chess board from his/her point of view. Helps me seeing what the other player does. I hope this is not cheating :S

I wouldn't think so; I too play through on an actual board at home - it seems more real than online. I can see the error (cheating!) in using engines to calculate moves, but there is a fine line between that and using databases of games that give you the most popular moves by percentage score.

If it's live chess, then yes it's cheating. You won't be warned for it and there's no way to get caught, but there's no analyze feature for a reason. If you meant correspondence then it's perfectly fine, and you can ignore this.

Is it cheating to use your own database of games?

Avatar of LoekBergman

Do you mean your own database with games of all other people or having a database of your own games?

The first: in live chess, definitely.

The second: actually yes, but I can understand that you do not have the same memory as GMs. But I would say that you definitely crossed a line when you used any annotations that you had in that game.
