Automatic renewal is not unusual but hide this info or option to cancel is.
What Chess.com does with "cancelling the auto-renewal" is bordering on the impossible and dishonest.

It's not hard to do. There are differences based on the purchase method, but that isn't a problem eith the site since they have to work within the confines of how the different payment options work. For example, PayPal has more steps than a membership purchase with a card.
