DNS & Chess.com Connection Problems

Having problems connecting to Chess.com? Or want to know why you WERE having problems?

I have posted about it here:

http://chesscom.tumblr.com

--------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the post text:

Chess.com is unavailable??? Here is how to fix it.

If you are having problems reaching Chess.com it is because somebody at NetworkSolutions.com MESSED UP the DNS records for our host. This has been resolved for 99% of Chess.com users. However, there are some people who are still unable to access Chess.com and we’re VERY SORRY! This was completely out of our hands and we are powerless to fix it. It has already been fixed, but it takes a while for those fixes to be “propagated” across the entire internet. (What is propogation?? Read about it here: http://www.yourwebhosts.ca/article-dns-propagation-explained.htm )

There are 5 things you can do to fix this:

#1 – Just keep checking back. Your ISP/internet provider should eventually get the right DNS issue.

#2 – Flush your DNS: For windows, go to your start menu, then click on RUN and then type in “cmd” and hit enter. Then type in “ipconfig /flushdns” and hit enter. On Mac and some linux distributions the command is /etc/init.d/nscd restart

#3 – Contact your ISP and let them know that they are holding old DNS data for Chess.com and need to renew it.

#4 – Use a different DNS service other than your ISP. Try OpenDNS FREE version: http://www.opendns.com/start/

#5 – Edit your HOSTS file (though you MUST UNDO this edit in the near future to avoid problems!) Entry should be: “68.71.245.5       chess.com”

I WISH WISH WISH there were something I could do more to fix there error. I have been stressing about this for more than 48 hours now and I’m powerless to fix it for everyone since it is now in the internet plumbing.

I’m personally IRATE at Network Solutions and their huge error. I’m doing everything in my power to somehow fix the issue, but unfortunately it is up to individual ISPs and internet providers around the world to update their DNS records . If you are upset as well, then contact Network Solutions and let them know: http://www.networksolutions.com/help/email.jsp

Please accept my apologies – again, this was a massively unfortunate error outside of our control.

Once you are able to connect, please contact Chess.com support (http://support.chess.com) if you have lost any games on time during this period and they will be restored.

Frustratedly and apologetically,

Erik

Chess.com

pdela

yup, thanks for the info

Guess I'm lucky, I had no problems. But thanx for the feed back.

I had problems 2 days ago all day long to connect but the problem got solved by itself in the evening. I see you posted here how to solve it but the problem is that all the users with the problem will not see your post :)

So when problems like this happen you may want to send an e-mail to the users with the resolution.

I appreciate the pain you feel on behalf of those having issues.  You are doing what you can, and restoring lost games is obviously a part of that. I like your response --  as opposed to someone just shrugging their shoulders and saying "it's not my problem."

Thanks again,Erik.

gorgan_zolla has been playing live chess most of today as for malik21, i don't know yet, he hasn't replied to me.

Mahalo for all the efforts, now lets keep our eyes pealed on any future Network upgrades (outside of chess.com) that may well effect us! Its normally just like that say (it will not effect you), but then , its "oh we did not realize that other server was there" that needed to be changed too!. :-(

Also I never liked upgrades that happen on Friday's, as then the key network people are off or on vacation (weekend) then they have to be called back or wait until Monday morning when they return top work. And they go oh its this one step I forgot too mention in the procedure - to our weekend tech's Oops!

Or worst they fix it and never tell anyone one else what they did, it called job security! Grr!

Anyway its working here in Hawaii now, Yahoo! Mahalo!

I don't know if this has something to do with the DNS errors, but I keep getting 502 - Bad Gateaway errors today. Chess.com works like once per a few minutes, the off again.

hah same thing happen to me just a few minutes ago

kohai

I am aware of the bad gateways folks :( I saw them too.

We're working on it now

kco

do we need to do anything ?

Kacparov

Yes I would like to know that too :)

And guess I was th 1% who got that DNS errors too. But they were like a week ago.

kohai

Kacparov, the dns errors were seen by members from around 29th August, some still see them

kco, no, i've just woken the programmers up to check on whats happening.

kco

@kacparov,well for a start you better go to the post office and get some stamps (plenty in your case) and some envelopes so you won't time out if the case come to worst.

Kacparov

I still have 1 month of vacation left. I hope the protection will work if I can't log in anymore. But that would also mean loss of all 1 month (just like it happened to Haddad56 who got those errors and couldn't log in then he lost 30 days of vacation)...

kohai

not true kacparov. He had 860 games, with 131 [few minutes remaining]. He didn't want to remove vacation time incase he lost those games on time.

He did remove vacation time and he didn't lose any of the games on time.

Kacparov

He told me that he had to remove vacation 30 times after the protection kept kicking in. That is he played 5 games, protection kicks in, he switches it off, loses 1 vacation day. He plays another 5 games, agains protecion kicks in, again he loses 1 vacation day. That's what he explained to me. And he said he couldn't access the site due to server problems. I guess they were those DNS problems.

I'm afraid the same will happen when I go to World Champs, I'll run out of vacation and lose on time when I go to the next tourney...

kohai

Those weren't dns issues, but this thread is for members with dns issues :)

Kacparov

What were they then?

And was the recent update done to fix those Bad Gateway errors?

kohai

I'm not a programmer so i won't pretend to know or understand .. the gateway errors came from Chess.com server. Our programmer knows what caused it and fixed it ( a couple of times )

I can tell you though that the gateway error today is not related to the dns errors.
