Happening to me today and it's January 2024! 11 years later! This happened to me several months ago. Don't know what I did but it stopped doing this. Today, I tried clearing my cach. Logging out and back in. Closing the tab and opening a new one. Refreshing my tab. Changing browsers... nothing is working.
Just started playing a week ago and this is happening every second match.

This happened to me couple of days ago, then it went away. I think it's a bug but seeing it hasn't been fixed for 11 years is annoying.

Make sure you don't have multiple tabs in /play open. The sound of the moves can be played on both.
Yes, I checked to make sure not multiple tabs playing. And there were none. But when the last time it happened, it was when I hadn't logged out of the open tab when I left that tab and returned, it showed the typical "you've been disconnected". So I refreshed the tab and from that point forward during the rest of that day, I had wonky piece movement sounds. It's possible that I launched the first game after refreshing the tab too quickly after refreshing. I sort of got that sense that might have caused it.
I have the same issue, but only in the library (not in analysis mode, just when I review my games in the library with the arrows). There is an annoying double sound for each move. Moreover the sounds are sometimes wrong, they are as if a piece was captured when it's just a move without capture. Strangely, the only moves that sound correct are the ones for which I have included a variation in analysis mode. It's been a long time I have this problem (since the beginning of library in chess.com), and it has never disappeared. I don't have multiple tabs opened.

hasn't been fixed in 11 years?!
For most people reading this, most likely, like what Caleb said, you probably have multiple chess.com home tabs open. this is what happened to me and closing them fixed everything. If that doesn't work then I recommend trying resetting/deleting your chess.com cookies or clearing cache
I only have single tab open, but after a few games I start getting the double tap audio problem. The only fix is to close the browser and reopen.

When playing or watching live chess in a browser, other than by turning the sound off, how do I change the annoying double sound (tap, tap) when a move is made to a single sound (tap).
