draw on time?

I had a Knight and a king, and my opponent had a rook and a king.  Then when my opponent ran out of time the game was declared a draw.  Why did the game say it was a draw instead of win for me on time?

Did you really expect to be able to checkmate your opponent?

Avatar of ClockBurner

I dont know what you mean by that.  I should have won on time but I didn't I don't get where that comment came from.  I know I wouldn't be able to checkmate them if I tryed but I still should have won on time!

What If you had a Queen, Rook, and a Bishop against his king? Would it be fair if he won on time?

Well I agree that if you can't win with checkmate and your opponent loses on time then it should be a draw. If they have three pieces vs a knight though, I think the knight should win due to the possibility of smothered mates.

Well pawn it would be highly unlikely that you would get a smothered mate, they would keep checking until checkmate :|

Well, in many timed-chess contexts, the general rule (which most of the people responding here seem to be assuming you already know) is this:  In order to claim a win when your opponent's flag falls, you still need to have enough material on the board to administer a checkmate somehow.  Otherwise, the most you can claim is a draw.  For instance, if you only have a K and your opponent has a K and a Q when his flag falls, you only get a draw.  Of course, there are some cases where arbitrating this becomes more challenging...

Thank you so much for your helpfull aswers!  And also Eric, thankyou for reasponding with such a helpul comment.  I didn't know about the rule that you described.  I thought if your opponents flag falls you win.  Thank you again!

Your best shot is to share the point since there is no way you could win with a knight and king.

On the other hand, your opponent with a rook and king has legitimate winning chances so therefore the game continued until his flag dropped and thus the point  shared.

actually with the co-operation of the K+R mate is possible.

No, sorry, your opponent had sufficient mating material, so when you timed out, your opponent automatically won.

In other words yes you did have more metiriel but he could have mated you if you had unlimetide time.  (Even if it means you have cooporation from your opponent.
