Elimination Bug In Daily Tournament

In the official 2022 Chess.com Daily Chess Championship tournament (here: https://www.chess.com/tournament/2022-chess-com-daily-chess-championship/ ), I honestly didn't expect to get past the first round, especially after losing to the top seed in my group. But then the improbable occurred and I tied with the leader (20 wins apiece). There are no tie-breaks in this tournament, so I should be advancing along with the top seed.

However, on my tournaments page it shows that I've been eliminated. And on the page for the tournament itself, it shows the top seed secured promotion but I didn't.

(I don't know how to link to my specific group, but it's Group 2344, which anyone should be able to see by scrolling down this page: https://www.chess.com/tournament/2022-chess-com-daily-chess-championship/pairings?&page=94 )

And here -- 2022 Chess.com Daily Chess Championship - Player Chan_Fry - Chess.com -- it shows that I have been eliminated.

It's my first tournament, so I can't be of any help. Maybe there's a rule that you don't make it through on a tie if you lost to the person you tied with? (I can't find that rule anywhere, but maybe that's how it goes?)

You're my friend, so I'll say it's a raw deal. You should definitely get a chance to advance.

Thanks, Anderson. I've filed a bug report just in case.

I checked all the FAQ sections on tournaments and found nothing to that effect. In fact, in tournaments *without* tie breaks (like this one), there are actually *no* tie breaks. I even found another ongoing tournament (also official, from Chess.com) in which I'm tied with the leader and marked for advancement, despite having lost both games to the leader:

If there are secret tie-break rules that apply to one tournament but not another, Chess.com needs to acknowledge it and list them somewhere.

Ah, thanks for the information. Definitely sounds like a bug then. Hope they fix it soon.

Again, this tournament is *not* utlizing tie breaks. As noted above (see screenshot), in tournaments without tie breaks, who defeated whom isn't relevant as long as the total number of wins is the same. This is not a case of me misunderstanding tie breaks, it's a bug and I reported it here in the hopes that someone from Chess.com will see it (no one has responded to my bug report yet).

How long does one normally wait before receiving confirmation of a bug report? I assumed I would at least get a generic email: "we have received your report", but so far, nothing.

Yes you are on the same points in the tournament but he beat you 2 times so he will progress due to head to head record.

I didn't think that mattered in no tiebreak events; if the score and tiebreaks are the same, both move forward as far as I'm aware.

I already addressed this above, and in fact included a screenshot from a separate tournament with the same rules and a similar situation. In a tournament without tie breaks, it doesn't matter who defeats whom how many times; the only thing that matters is how many total wins each player in the group accumulates.

That's *usually* correct, Martin (see my screenshot above, from a different tournament with the same rules). But in this case, it doesn't appear to matter. It's been a week since I sent my bug report, without even an automated response, and nearly two weeks since I first noted the issue in the comment section under the tournament.

(I won't be upset if I don't advance. The players in Round 2 will be far too strong for me. I just wanted to point out the bug that eliminated players who -- by the rules -- should advance, mainly in case it happened to someone else who truly has the skill to play in Round 2.)

What's even weirder, to me, is that in the same tournament I've finished all my games and have ZERO chance of advancement, but the tournament still lists me as "active" (instead of "eliminated").

One difference between your group and mine is that your leader hasn't (technically) *clinched* the first place spot. They still have two ongoing games and the third-place players still has a chance to catch them. In my group, the leader had enough wins to *clinch* the first place spot early, and that's when I was marked as "eliminated", despite a few games still going on. That's when I made that first post on the tournament page a couple of weeks ago (because I noticed that I still technically had a chance to tie).

Regardless, I'm not going to lose sleep over not advancing. It does bother me quite a bit that Chess.com won't even acknowledge my bug report (or reply on the official tournament page). They could just say "we decided to do it this way this time" and that would be the end of it. meh.png

UPDATE: This issue is now resolved. Thank you to everyone who commented or offered suggestions.

(I never did get a response to my bug report, but I was able to directly contact an administrator of the tournament, and a day or two later my status was changed from "eliminated" to "active", so it looks like I'll move on to Round 2.)

Glad to hear it, Chan. Good luck in Round 2!
