That thing is just cosmetic.
It's there to make it so your mind is more likely to subliminally think something like "Ooh, there's a gold asterisk next to this option, so it looks more appealing to me. Shiny... I think I will click it."

Does anyone know what the gold asterisk is for on the final position screen? When you finish an on-line game, in the upper right hand corner, several options are listed (Add to Friend List, Award a Trophy, etc). I have noticed a gold asterisk appears next to one of these on my final position screens. Does it require action on my part or was it instigared by my opponent, or what?
I've only played a few of these games so far and I want to make sure I'm not missing something. Thanks.
