Eric: POSTING in FORUM

Yes. I still like reading top to bottom, but maybe the "view post" link would bring you right to the last post always.

Either that or a page just displays more posts... is there any reason behind stretching them out over pages? I'd almost prefer having all of the comments on one page always, I dunno.

Erik,

That would be perfect in my opinion.  What would really work for me is if everywhere that the last post is referenced, clicking on that link would take you to the last post.  Currently it takes you to the top of the thread.

Thanks for all the great work!

would it be easier if we just had a GO TO LAST COMMENT link? :)

Hey Erik, I think the easiest thing to do would just be to add a sorting filter for viewing comments by ascending or descending order. That way everyone can choose the option which is most suitable for them.

I agree that it is sometimes tedious to have to find the last post, but I've seen some sites where the first post is at the bottom, and it's a lot worse, imo.  You have to scroll to either the very bottom or the very first page and find what the first person said.  Then you have to read upwards, and unless your native tongue is one of those abnormal languages that reads bottom to top, it's not as easy as reading top to bottom.  No offense meant to anyone whose native tongue is one of those languages; by abnormal, I just mean to say that most languages in the world read top to bottom.  I agree that there should be a Go To Last Post link.

Wow!   I didn't think so many people would have such strong opinions about this!  I like Erik's idea:  Give each person the option to view topics either from top to bottom or vice versa.

This only came up because I actually started a topic and was viewing the comments between moves.  Each time I went to the forum, I had to scroll down to the bottom to read the last comment.

erik
i think we'll add a link to last comment...

In reality, we're being a tad nitpicky... it's not like it's THAT much trouble to click on through. Haha. These are minor nuances, but then again, that's what chess players excell at detecting and working on... little minor changes in the "position". Again, it's nitpicky, and in truth, the current system isn't, of course, at all "awful" to deal with or something. But yeah, if you add a link to the last comment that could be cool.

yes, reading up is weird, i agree. a go to last comment link would be a good compromise

pleasant_business
but a ascending/decending order option would be neater, in my opinion
TalFan
maybe also have the option to randomise the comments order for the eccentrics

I like having several pages. It helps me remember where I was up to and it cuts loading times when there are several boards and pictures in the thread.

I find that this whole post is becoming a bit like a Monty Python sketch............perhaps we are splitting hairs.  I'm almost sorry I brought it up.  This is a great website.  I merely had a suggestion to make it a bit more user friendly.

erik
i like the suggestion! i am going to add a link to help out :)

Some forums I have visited give you an option to view oldest or newest first. One forum (forums.Catholic.com) allows linear or non-linear mode:

What an odd choice to make an example :D

Sorry Puppaz, religion and chess have no place being in the same sentence Smile
