File download from the site error

Sort:

Heya.  Starting this morning, everytime I navigate the site (the browser refreshes), it is trying to force a .css into the browser.  "xd_proxy.css".  Downloading the file simply opens up notepad with the following text inside...

.app_content_51546247891 a.uiLinkSubtle { display: none; }
.app_content_51546247891 a.UIImageBlock_ICON_Image { display: none; }

#bootloader_Zvucx { height: 42px; }

It is hideously distracting when navigating through chess games ready for next moves.

What gives?

From a quick google search it looks like it might be an issue with Facebook integration. Are you signed in via Facebook? (Source)

It appears this is coming from Facebook code:

I have seen this on several other sites that use the same Facebook code, to display a "Like" or "Share" button.

HooVooLoo

Mmm, I only added someone to facebook through an e-mail.  Thanx for the heads-up.

The really annoying thing is even after closing down the browser just reopening it to chess.com, that file keeps trying to download.  Anyone know of a way to stop it?  (This is why I don't do Facebook much.  I HATE them.)

HooVooLoo

Well, I tried rebooting, and searching through the registry for any instances of "facebook" and xd_proxy to no avail.  Still keeps trying to DL the bloody file, but only on chess.com.

findparties

Im having the same problem on my site - findparties.net it looks to be a Facebook issue. Hopefully they will resolve this FAST!

Well, when browsing chess.com, the xd_proxy file is trying to download from static.ak.fbcdn.net

It has something to do with the code on chess.com's pages, since it doesn't happen to me on any other sites.  I added the site to the restricted zone in IE8, and now everytime I browse it pops up with the security alert box that the file was blocked from being downloaded due to my security settings.

This is unacceptable.  Chess.com should get rid of whatever code related to Facebook is in the source, because it's invasive and irritating.

This same file keeps opening up for me too. It opened for Foxnews.com and Youtube and a google search had this thread as the most relevant discussion (and naturally it opened again when I came here). So any ideas?

HooVooLoo

Strange since when I open foxnews and youtube I don't get the error.  I'm running a Mal-ware search on my machine to see if it'll register.

Given the text of the file I dont think it is malware. I think it's just an app from facebook that has a few screws loose and is letting it's guts leak out. So far none of my antivirus, adware or spyware stuff has come up with a hit on this. It should be noted that I clicked thru to FoxNews and Youtube from links on Facebook, and now it pops up regardless how I access the site. Im also using browser IE8 on Windows XP Pro Svc Pack 3.

Here's the text from my little error, it is exactly the same every time regardless of what site I go to:

.app_content_51546247891 a.uiLinkSubtle { display: none; }
.app_content_51546247891 a.UIImageBlock_ICON_Image { display: none; }

#bootloader_Zvucx { height: 42px; }

Got some more info on it here:

This error might occur because your browser isn't compatible with IE5 content. Notice the "Content.IE5" in the full filename.

Yeah, I've been looking through what other people are running into on other sites.  It seems the offending code is embedding into each pages source through some .js routine.

Here's the offendor.

<scriptsrc="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js"></script>

<script>
  FB.init({appId: '2427617054', status: true, cookie: true, xfbml: true});
  if ( ! window.ChesscomFB ) var ChesscomFB = {};
  ChesscomFB.share = function (url) {
   var params = { method:'stream.share' };
      if (url) {
        if (url.indexOf('/') === 0) url = 'http://www.chess.com'+ url;
   } else {url = location.href;}
      if (url.indexOf('utm_source') === -1) url = url.replace(/\?|$/, '?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=sharelink&').replace(/&$/,'');
      params['u'] = url;FB.ui(params);}

That has absolutley nothing to do with anything related to this issue.  It's just a folder name in the cache directory.

Im using IE8, IE5 has never even been on this computer so that cannot possibly be the problem.

I don't think Chess.com is going to get rid of the facebook integration as a lot of people use it to play on the site. Some just through the facebook appliation and some to sign on to the site.

One thing you might do. Log out of Chess.com and facebook if you are logged in there.  Clear your cache. Log back into chess.com with your chess.com username and password (in case you were using your facebook account before). See if it still happens.

HooVooLoo

I don't use Facebook.  Period.  I have an account but I don't use it.  I don't sign into it.  I don't access anything through it.  There is no reason to attempt to clear the cache, because the cache is irrelevant.

The site is attempting to download the file every single time.  I don't want or need the file.  This is happening to many people across multiple sites, all of which have Facebook code in their pages, so the Facebook servers are trying to muck about.  Until the Facebook peeps figure out what the deal is, why couldn't Chess.com admin staff simply remove the relevant code until the problem is fixed?

That's all I'm suggesting, because the browser trying to download the file every time is utterly distracting to the game. It even pops up after making a move (because the browser page refreshes.   :-(

And since downloading the file (Win 7 here, by the way) doesn't solve the issue, does that mean we must now play the game through Facebook just to get it to stop?

I never should have clicked to add that friend through e-mail this morn.  Pffhhht.

If you're going to ask for help and then not try anything suggested, then I guess no one can help you. Clearing the cache can help since the file is in your cache (though, if it really is downloading everytime, then it probably won't help -- seems that it should be cached and trying to read from the cache). It is also possible that facebook has fixed whatever the issue is and your browser may still be using the old, cached version, of the file, the one with the issue (again, assuming it really isn't reloading each time). But what can it hurt to try that?

I can't guarantee that is the issue, just a thought on how you could test. You could also use a different browser. I'm using Firefox 4.0 Beta 10 and haven't seen the problem you are describing.

And, as I mentioned before, removing the code/integration could potentially impact more people than are being impacted by the problem you are seeing.

Unfortunately, this error is coming from facebook and not something we can
