Game abandoned?

So, I was playing a game and after a few moves I got to a point where I was contemplating if I should play a certain line and then BOOM, it said I abandoned the game and gave that game to my opponent!

What the hell is that? Am I not allowed to think "too much"?

I agree, this is annoying. For some reason during the first few moves of the game, if you think for too long, chess.com may say you abandoned the game. Most of the time, a timer or something appears on the screen telling you that you have to make a move with x seconds or else you will lose by abandonment.

But this is the most critical time when I think the most - opening when I run into something new or a line I don't fully remember and the early middlegame. There is a timer indeed, but I read in the past in the forum that the timer won't really stop your game if you are still there, and it used to be like that indeed until now.
In any case, you should not be pressureized to make a move in the most critical part of the game, the game can see you are not idle or something.

I think the first few moves is where you think the least. The opening phase is important, but the first 2-3 moves are usually the quickest

It wasn't in the second or third move, it was at move 8.
https://www.chess.com/game/live/123265394758?move=0Here, I started to calculate and think if I should go Nb5. I started calculating and trying to find if maybe I have a resource to his counter reply Ne5, because if I have then Nb5 is strong. I also wondered if he'll see Ne5. Just when I finally decided that it's probably not working and I shouldn't play it I got this message and the game ended.

You can't use more than half the base move time on any move in the first 10 moves. After that you can use as much time as you want and the first move has a separate time to be made

Ok, I'll remember it from now on, even though I don't really agree with its logic.

It's primarily due to abuse where some players makes an early blunder and makes their opponent wait out the clock to win on time.

I see that, but it also prevents legitimate players from using their time in the most crucial phase - in the opening, when they can meet a position they're not familiar with and need to think.
