game abandoned abuse

Can we get some action taken against the people who abuse via game abandonment? I just played some guy who was one move from mate, with no pieces other than his king, and he let the time run out for over a minute. It didn't even give him a warning. And the people who do get warnings keep doing it, over and over and over. Clearly, the current system does not punish them sufficiently.

We should ban them immediately.

Couldn't agree more.  On too many occassions opponents will let time expire - in my case up to 20 minutes! - rather than resign or continue to a check mate.   Something must be done about this!  Does a loss due to time not effect your score as much as a being mated?

You had nothing to do for 1 minute ?

These minutes add up. Maybe you don't value your time, but some of us do.

Even if it is just one minute, it's immature as hell.

Here is a practical solution which chess.com could implement with ease: Keep track of each player's percentage of games abandoned. Then, allow each player to set a tolerance level, so that they can decline to play anyone who has an excessively high percentage of games abandoned.

It can't be helped. Try bullet games just like strong players in this websites do. They clearly know what in it for them. Although I understand your frustration, sometimes it can't be helped as there are legitemate players who lose connection sometimes.

It can be helped. It's not at all difficult to discern between people who lose their connections and people who deliberately time out when they are losing.

Yes, it is irritating to have players stall when getting pounded, but it is the nature of this distance play.  They are not live games, so take it philosophically.  As long as the same value is transferred, regardless of the way players lose, who really cares.  Game records are said to be permanent, so a review would prove the winner by points, position, etc.  In any case, the site serves the needs of those who cannot play otherwise, allowing for great practice.  . . . . . . . If you sign on for a 14 day game, just be prepared to have all of the fun drained away while waiting.  I think the 24 hour clock is good for those of us who have a lot of professional and family duties and want some daily action at chess. . . . . You don't know what leisure the player at the other end has available.

Poor sportsmanship is the defamation of those who practice it.

i'd rather sit and do nothing for a minute than actually play.  think about it.

Much attention is given in the forums to the Fair Play Policy.

That Chess.com is doing (or has done) nothing about those who abandon games is not true.

They could EASILY do more.

Prove to me using whatever method or software you can, what was in that players brain at the time (doesn't count if he was sending you taunting messages in the chat box).

Its not at all hard to keep statistics on the frequency of how often people disconnect from games, nor is it hard to correlate whether they tend to do it more often when they are losing. Chess.com could easily do this and take action against those who act abusively. I have no idea why some of you are defending these people, but its probably because you are yourself a disconnecter.

1 minute isn't long. Was the electricity about to run out?

AlCzervik

I think you should send a message to chess.com asking for your minute back.
