Is this a bug or is this some glitch that people have figured out and use to their advantage?

I waited minutes for my opponent (it was showing he wasn’t in the game) to make a move. I got a notification on my phone so went to check it for like 10 seconds. I come back to the game only to find I was declared lost due to abandonment. FOR 10-15 SECONDS WHILE MY OPPONENT GOT -2.0 MINUTES!
