games aborted when opponent losing

This seems to happen more and more. When an opponent is losing they abort and thereby don't lose the game. They have even said they were going to do it. How is this possible?

It's not. The server may have been rebooting and your opponent is claiming they are going to abort but really the site is doing maintenance.

BlackElk
Not so. It happens all the time when opponent is losing in a bad way and always against higher rated players. No one knows when the server reboots and to say that is simply not wanting to recognize that some people know how to abort without the consequence of losing. This is an issue. It is. It a server reboot
VintagePawn

The site sends out server messages when they are preparing to reboot. The idea is to keep people from starting new games or to let them finish up before then.

This happened to me too. My opponent aborted one move before checkmate just now.

Are you sure your opponent didn't lose the game? People have sometimes aborted when I'm winning, and it says that I won because the game is abandoned. Go back to some of those games, and I think the abandoned games will be considered losses on your opponents' parts. Chess.com is pretty good at not allowing people to manipulate their way out of a loss. To make matters better, whenever someone abandons a game, a notification says that that person may have violated the fair play policy and might have their account restricted. So check those games again, and I think you'll be happier about the results, although it still would've been nice if you were able to checkmate your opponent or cause them to resign. They're definitely being poor sports, but I don't think they're getting away with it completely.

i have had the same issue that's why i googled it. this seems to happens only when the opponent is losing. A lot of times im waiting for the opponent to make a move his clock is running . whenever they take long time to move I suspect it's going to happen and it does. I check to see if i'm having poor connection. But my connection is strong. Then the opponent makes a move. The game aborts then I lose BY ABANDOMENT. How did I lose by abandoment when my clock was not running and it was not my time to move?

Losing by abandonment and aborts are completely different things. Aborts can only happen if no move have been made or the live server restarted.

Abandonment is caused by connection issue to the Live server.

I don't know why the site even starts the abandonment counter when it's not your turn, but currently that is something that happens.

i dont know what is causing it. Twice today it happened and i was winning. the 2 players were from India. Is there a way to cheat? many game do have cheat sheets. IT is weird because whenever im loosing this never happens.

No, the Live server process handles all communication and your opponent can't impact your connection.

today i was playing a guy from India. i had 4:13 time on my clock he was losing and again he took about 30 or more seconds to move. then a move was made and the game ended "saying sorry you lost on time" how did i lose on time when it was not my time to move and futher more my clock had over 4 minutes. here is the link to that game may 28,2020 https://www.chess.com/live?#g=4920282050

The archive shows your game was lost due to abandonment. You probably lost connection to the server

Same here,.. After 20 minutes into the game. Opponent is losing. And suddenly it says game is aborted !!! .. This is the third time it happens in two months. I think all of them were from India. .. I feel very frustrated.

I literally (10 min ago) just played a game where the opponent was losing and aborted mid game (message popped up saying ‘game aborted’) . His comment icon was still active though. Also he did not appear on my history list that shows who I have played. This is not on. Please fix.

I can’t remember the user name but it was something Teeiki (not the right spelling). Profile pic was a 1980’s style photo where the person was smoking a cigar)

I’m amazed at how many problems this site/app has. Not to mention having to actually pay for this (not anymore).

Happened to me right now. 12min left on the clock and my opponent was clearly losing. Literally 5 seconds after his move I get the message that the game was aborted. The game is not in the archive and he was a higher rated player which would have given me a nice boost if I won. This is not on and a waste of time if people are able to cheat like this. They should be identified by the server team and banned from playing. They are spoiling it for many.

There was a server restart. When that happens, all ongoing games are aborted.

This just happened to me now against a higher rated player.
I was obviously winning (+12) and my opponent had 5 minutes left, suddenly a message pops up saying the game was aborted!!!

The servers here in India run on American web infrastructure and website security company, Cloudflare. These servers keep crashing routinely for some reason. Even the Chess Olympiad Final between Russia and India was ruined because of it. I don't know if this is the only problem, but I can assure you, normal accounts cannot abort games when they feel like it.
