The Point of Points

I see. But I think would think you would get points if you played CHESS on CHESS.com, wouldn't you?

Yes, they can. You can get a 6 month premium membership by redeeming 10000 points. It's chess.com's way of encouraging users to participate in the forums. Good luck!

macer75

I can see that you still have a long way to go.

FrodoPiano

How many points do I have, and how many points are awarded for each post? Also, do you get them for playing chess at all? Is there any way you can LOSE points?

You get 1 point per post. You do not get them for playing chess. The only way to lose points is if you post extremely offensive comments in the forums and the mods catch you, because again, the "point of points" is to encourage forum activity, and offensive comments make other people less willing to participate.

FrodoPiano

That makes sense. BTW, how many points do you have, and how do you know all this?

Schachkaempfer

Perhaps we can get an administrator here to explain how points are actually accrued.  I do not think, that it is just for posting in forums or blogs.  I noticed I had about 50 points even before I ever posted anything.

macer75

You can see how many points you have in the "about me" section of your profile. I currently have 1539 points (about to have 1540 after I post this comment). I know all this because I've been a member here for a while, so I've had time to get to know the website, from various sources such as forums and FAQs. Don't worry - you'll get the hang of it very soon!

@FrodoPiano

Macer75 is pulling your leg with his 6 month premium membership tall tale.  It is true that once upon a very long time ago, Erik used to give out Tshirts but currently points are useful only to gauge how active a poster someone is.

macer75

Don't trust baddogno - he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. As you may have noticed, there r a lot of people on this site who have premium memberships. Do you think that all of them used their hard-earned money to buy their memberships. Baddogno did, but most of them didn't. It's not a coincidence them most premium members are very active in the forums.

O, and I didn't really want to mention it at first, but I got points deducted for this post: Frown

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/artistic-chess

As you can see, it has already been locked by the mods. I didn't think my post was extremely offensive, but apparently the mods did.

FrodoPiano

Which one, the game, or the comment?

Thank you for the help- I'm already getting the harping of it. I also now see that I have 132 points, after I found that section of my profile. (Now I will have 133, I guess)

Hey, do you get points for starting tournaments/groups?

Only if you get titled players to join your tournament, or if you get a certain number of players to join your group (I forget exactly how many, but it's a really big number). Every day there r lots of ppl starting tournaments and groups, so it wouldn't make sense to reward every one.

macer75

So anyway, it's extremely difficult to get points for starting tournaments or groups. Posting on the forums is b far the easiest way to gain points.

FrodoPiano

That makes sense. Speaking of tournaments, check out the 2nd FrodoPiano Tournament. There are two, for different rating ranges. I need more players, so feel free to join. (You're not a titled player, are you?) Haha

macer75

lol, no, I'm not a titled player. I still have a lot of room for improvement before I can even consider becoming a titled players. Most titled players on this site have their title in front of their username, so it's easy to tell that they're titled players. A few, however, such as FN_Perfect_Idiot, are more modest, and prefer not to display their titles.

O, and btw, I'm already in too many tournaments, so I can't join yours (free players can only join a limited number of tournaments - guess I should get more points so that I can get the 6 month premium membership). If you want people to join the tournament, it might help to post a link to it.

warrior689

same here. i wanted to join tournaments but chess, coms policy is really screwing it up.

That would be great. Also, I think that you can play in only one tournament at a time, if you're a free member. If you want to join the tournament after you've fineshed your current tournament, you would have to join the 700-1499 one (as opposed to the 600-1299 one).
