Is anybody gonna make IMBacon stop trying to be a mod again? Most of us know how it went the first time. He is not a authority here.

There is a club that was set up for the purpose: https://www.chess.com/club/mediation-and-arbitration

Pretty exclusive group.

That gives me an idea to start a chess.com "Peoples Court"  Except with a Supreme Court type setup.

People can bring their cases to us.

That's more or less what that club is, except that it was intended to be more of a mediation group than arbitration, where possible, so a strong preference for helping people resolve their own disputes rather than making a ruling.

I have created the very first chess.com Supreme Court:

https://www.chess.com/club/chess-com-supreme-court

First of all...well...we need Supreme Court Justices.  If you're interested feel free to apply.  Once we have 7 Justices we will commence operations.

You shouldn't be the one to pick them, given your inability to judge correctly in the past.

Forgiveness is for me, not you.  Its so i can let go.  Unfortunately you have chosen not to, and there is nothing i ca do about that.

How did this violate the Terms of Service?

Moderators must have missed this question.

Explains a lot.

Where's that from?

At one point, I know we were supposed to be locking new v2 threads and directing people to the v2 club.

superchessmachine

I like IMBacon's court idea and really think it was needed.

MGleason

There are lots of v2 threads, and I'm not really interested in wading through them to find the right one.

BTW, that setting is new, and it's disabled because the feature currently only exists on mobile.

MGleason

The fact that they appear to be enabled is confusing, but it's irrelevant because the feature doesn't exist in web and email yet.

Ok...Ok....Mr Bacon's side project is great but back to the copyrighted material. If its in PDF form......I assume its Ok.....am I wrong?  I don't think most members would know the difference. We would assume.....the material fell into "public domain".....or the author chose not to renew his protection for old material.

No Ronald, if it is in PDF form it may still be copyrighted material. There are plenty of sites out there that have books that have been converted to pdf that are still on the bestseller lists.

Thanks Rsava.  I don't want to mention their name because I'm new to this phenomenon about the site being used to disemenate copyrightable material but....... there's a member that's been fighting this for awhile.....I think it would be a good test case for Mr Bacon's court of impartial justices..... I mean mediators.

Im still waiting for you to join Ron.  Got a powdered wig for ya and everything!

I agree with you, that is why i already had to turn down 2 members.

It's not only the copyrighted material the problem. There are other "games"  much more unethical.

Chesscafe is a well known site that sells books. 3 years ago  had some serious credibility issues because of bad management.Orders were not delivered in customers and no one was answering the phones.

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/what-is-going-on-with-the-chess-cafe

Eventually it changed ownership and the new owner wanted to empty the warehouse.

That included several copies of useless books that would never going to sell. All these happened 3 years ago.

At exactly that time a guy opens a new account.

That guy played no games,   participated in no groups and posted nothing. He did nothing else except going around in the  various topics created by mainly novices suggesting to all of them the same list of books with reviews from only one site: Chesscafe. Here is the even more weird:He has never studied himself these books. He only knows what the free excerpts say.

Allow me to do a small review:

A guy joins a chess site , he doesn't play , he doesn't participate in groups , he doesn't ask questions, he is not interested to be better in chess and the only thing he does is suggesting books that himself never studied!

Does that sound very weird only to me? If yes , then I am obviously paranoid and you can stop reading.

That guy was several times confronted by members of chess.com because his lists, in many cases, were literally of no use to the OP(for example a guy asking a question about Italian got as answer the same list of books that most of them had nothing to do with Italian). In some cases even an IM called his lists laughable while others also noted that he does nothing else(not playing , not participating in groups, not posting anything)  in the site except suggesting books.

After that he started to pretend that he is an active chessplayer. he started playing , he joined a couple of groups , he even pretend that he is active poster by posting nonsense(his last post "Anybody ever heard of Lyudmila") and he started posting mixed reviews with chesscafe still having the lion's share in them(obviously they realised that his absolute inactivity was way too suspicious).

Let's assume he is indeed trying to help. Why from his list of books  great writers are consistently missing? Why does he care so much to promote books he never studied and he has no idea if they are indeed helpful? And why so many good authors like Keres , Averbakh , Pachman , Bronstein even Kasparov are never on his lists?

A friend informed him about a review of Bronstein's book by Kasparov(Kasparov said in an interview that "Zurich 1953" is the best book ever written and the one that influenced  him the most). We were both hoping that Kasparov's opinion would find a small space in his lists. As you can expect , he buried Kasparov's review and Bronstein's book because chesscafe doesn't sell it(what else?).All chesscafe reviewers can have an opinion but not Kasparov!

The same guy employs the tactic " Break the nerves of anyone that tries to say that opening books are not good for beginners". Whenever I try to say to novices and beginners that they must not focus on openings , he starts asking stupid questions that lead nowhere while throwing quotes that have been said for advanced players in order to mislead people. Why he does that? Because obviously most of the books he tries to sell are opening books . His initial list had no endgame books at all. Now he added a couple to show that he is not trying to sell a specific type of books.

It's quite clear to me that the last thing he wants is to help people and the only thing he wants is to help chesscafe get rid of useless books. I am not sure if he is indeed a chesscafe employee(he is not that clever) or just a pawn of a more clever guy that is using him. I can't prove anything but the indications are so clear that I personally have no doubt about it!

But either he sells books or not  why chess.com  allows a guy to post reviews of a site that sell books? Don't they know that this site will try to promote everything they have in their storehouse either good or not, while they will try to bury everything they don't sell either good or not?

This guy is not the only problem.  Another guy goes from topic to topic advertising and suggesting Chessable even to 6 year old kids while attacking an IM and FIDE certified trainer that said its harmful for kids. And another guy in order to sell his book claimed  that it will make any player GM if he read it twice and he also claims that he can beat any engine. I don't care what he says , what I do care is that he uses these claims and obviously manufactured games to sell his books(that guy has been banned by other sites meaning they care too).

Why so much misleading is allowed in a site that claims it wants to promote chess?

Yes , I know , many posts , too many members , impossible to know everything that is happening but  the same thing is going on for 3 years while some of the misleading posts run for over a year!

It's really disapointing that if I say  "cheating"  a moderator will will lock the topic, in some cases in just a few hours(there is the well known forum game "in before the lock"), even when the topic is not acussing anyone(we were discussing in a topic if studying books while playing can be considered cheating and they locked that too, why?) while if I try to sell books misleading people no one will bother.

p.s. I didn't include names in this post.If a moderator messages me I can give him everything he wants.

Interesting read and conspiracy happy.png. I had no idea kindaspongey was just a desperate salesman, I thought he was just an idiot who had a .txt file of a bunch of chess book links.

@Lorgish I think this should go in your Chess.com Hollywood TMZ drama blog.

How about we nominate once we have enough nominees we can vote for our judges? The reason I asked if there were mediators is because I've seen IAMBBW call to selkea, who comes along and explains/interprets/mediates... The nominees can chose wether they want any part of this. Anyone who can help IAMBBW is a good candidate. I nominate selkea
