Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase an upgraded membership, however not display an icon next to your username that displays your membership status? I.e. the diamond next to ones username.

yes, now there's a toggle switch in the user profile to show/hide membership level. Thank you Chess.com

hmmm why i still can see my diamond member in game history? is there a way to hide it?

I don't think it's possible to remove premium status in the game history
