Do I have to play live chess to start earining a rating?  I've been playing against the computer, and I don't seem to have a rating yet.

Play live or online. Your rating starts at 1200. If you play the computer in live chess, that will give you a rating too.

Perhaps you are playng against Little Chess Partner. There is no rating change in this feature.

That wasn't any of those things.

On the seek graph, there are usually some dots that are a lighter green than the others - those are the computer. If you don't see them, you might have the "show computer seeks" turned off in your options.

Hi. I beat softx who has a rating of 1608 but my rating of 1342 did not change. He was was my greeter. Shouldn't my rating increase?

No, it was an unrated game.

Thanks Scott. I was under the impression that the point of the game was to establish my rating?

Nope, the point of that game was to have someone you could chat with who could show you the ropes of the site. Greeter games are always unrated.

I think they may be intended as a means for you to have someone to ask questions about using the software etc if you're unsure. I think a lot of members join and don't carry on with their games so perhaps they play unrated so their rating doesn't become inflated.

Thanks again. Does resigning a game result in more points being lost than playing it out?

Loss is a loss, draw is a draw, win is a win.

Loss is a loss, draw is a draw, win is a win.

And a horse is a horse, of course, of course.

Wont be improving, if you're losing, depending on the criteria you're using.

A greeter is just someone who volunteers to play unrated "welcome" games with new members. There used to be an option on your home profile (maybe there still is?) that you would check.  When people join the site, the website asks them if they want to play a game with a greeter. Never did it myself (either end) so I'm not sure if they still do it.
