On the green menu bar, go to MY HOME>Friends
Then simply go to whom you want to remove and then click on the little remove icon to the right of their name.

Go into your account under Privacy, and you'll see it as one of your choices, I believe.
You can't. You have to hunt them down and kill them to get rid of them. Fortunately, chess.com, according to the forums lately, provides a useful interactive map to find them.

But it looks like I need to pay a hefty membership fee to find my "friends" in real life.
This type of "information" doesn't come cheap! 
you go to the HOME tab ( in green) and click FRIENDS. It will show all of your friends and a button to the right of the profile picture will say: REMOVE
