Does anybody know how much one game of chess uses? Specifically 15'10 time control.

Avatar of MGleason

It depends on how long it is.  The time control is irrelevant.

Here's the PGN data for your most recent game, including the comments specifying the move times:

I don't know what data chess.com will store behind the scenes for the cheat detection system, etc.

Hi Mr. MGleason while your answer was elaborate I didn't get the answer I wanted. I'm asking about how much internet data one game will consume? It seems to me, playing a few games with 15'10 time control ate over 100 MB of data.

Avatar of MGleason

Ah - that I don't know.

If by "data" you are referring to network traffic, then of course it will be a ridiculous amount. The ads alone must represent hundreds of megabytes of data.

How do you normally play? From app or web browser?

Web browser

I suppose you could check your network tab in google dev tools and record it for a game and see. But it will probably change a lot from game to game.

Avatar of MGleason

If you're playing a few games and you see 100MB of data getting used, it's possible that other things were part of that - Windows and other software checking for updates, for example.

Close background downloads.

Games don't use so much data.

Even so, Windows 10 never seems to stop talking to Microsoft servers: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/even-when-told-not-to-windows-10-just-cant-stop-talking-to-microsoft/
