Because it was a crazyhouse game.

Appears like a non-standard game of chess. Never touched the variants on this site for a while, but I believe it's bughouse or crazyhouse.

White can plant a piece on d1.

In any case it will still be checkmate anyway regardless of what is planted on d1.

The good thing about crazyhouse is that you can summon captured pieces as your own on any particular turn. It makes players jump out of their chair when a knight appears out of nowhere and attacks both the king and the queen at the same time.

This quite literally is a checkmate, and no matter what is planted on d1, there will be an undoubted checkmate.

but opponent can put piece to block check in this case
