Oh, it worked! but I didn't know that until after I committed it by clicking Post. It gave every impression of NOT having worked.
Please may I humbly suggest, could the help article I quoted above, be updated? I'd be pleased to be a guinea pig to test or comment on a new version.

@manekapa, Thankyou very much! I hadn't seen that. I shall read it all the way through, including the comments, carefully. I'm glad this has been so well done. Batgirl obviously went to a lot of trouble to set it all out, so thankyou to her, too.

Here's an attempt
So I clicked on the little board icon above this post, pasted a FEN, made about three moves each side, it ends in checkmate win for Black. Clicked Insert. Back to this draft post. But before I click Post, all I see so far is a grey checkerboard with a dimmed pencil icon in the middle. No moves, no pieces, nothing else.
Please, what am I doing wrong or missing?
