It sounds like they processed your cancelation, just as you requested.

The benefits of a purchased membership endure, even if you cancel the auto-renewal.

However, it doesn't make sense that the free trial benefits would continue after you cancel.

On the same page where you can cancel your subscription

Hmm. As I said, the enduring benefits would only apply if you had previously bought some membership benefits from chess.com.

You hadn't, so there was nothing remaining when you canceled.

/  I think you outsmarted yourself.

I would write to support@chess.com to see if they have a way to let you start over. If they do, try canceling on the 7th day.

I understand but unfortunately the site is a bit confusing because I was able to see something  like this before canceling my subscription

This site is no different to life in general.

If you want a premium product...pay for it.

If you expect something for free it is not worth it.

Now ask yourself again...what do you really want ?

stop giving me life lessons wtf

ah yes, the old "free trial with heavy financial penalties for forgetting to cancel on the 7th day"

justbefair

There are no heavy financial penalties for forgetting.

If you forget to cancel and get charged, you can get a full refund as long as it's the first time you've done it and it is within 30 days of your sign-up.

Yeah but that's really obnoxious - let's look at how Nintendo, and every other company with integrity, handles free trials. If you cancel immediately, you still get the full benefits of the trial, the same way you would with a premium membership. Chess.com is a bad company, and most of you are mean people. I don't like chess players.

CherryWithaK

Thanks to this thread, I will set a reminder to myself to cancel my trial two days before the renewal date grin

Bro nintendo and integrity in the same sentence? That's a wild take

I googled this and just to point out the obvious, most subscription-based services let you keep accessing them if you cancel during your free trial period until said period actually ends. This model, where access is lost the moment you cancel, seems designed to encourage users to wait until the last minute and potentially pay by mistake. This is made a bit worse when you consider that the billing process itself is not very transparent in that it advertises a monthly fee that is actually based on the yearly discount, so to my understanding you will be charged the whole year if you pass the seven day trial. In any case it's not made immediately clear how much money will be charged on the 7th day, which is definitely done on purpose and is borderline shady.

I see people here justify this and i guess i shouldn't be surprised. Just pointing it out for anyone else who is in a similar situation and googles it. There's refund laws in the EU at least if you get charged accidentally for a service ( you can actually cancel for any reason in the first 14 days), but it seems that you actually have to go through support here and i wouldn't risk it if it can be helped, especially based on what i see. If you aren't considering staying and paying, set up a reminder on the 5th day or something or avoid the whole thing altogether.

i wanted to add to my own old post for clarity that i did end up taking the trial and in my case they did let me use the service after canceling, perhaps because i didn't cancel right away. Also, they do a thing where they add days so keep that in mind.
